Spotter
• Spotters assist truck drivers to back-up, unload and drive away.
• Spotters guide drivers away from hazards
• Spotters stay OUT of the line of fire (see below picture)

Traffic Marshal
 A "traffic controller“ directs traffic from a position of
safety
 Traffic Controllers are protected from impact by
physical barriers
PPE ( Personal Protective Equipment )
Signals
• Red means Stop- everyone Green means go
Responsibilities
• Supervisors and Foremen
– Ensure all persons in the quarry understand the rules and
arrangements for traffic control = JHA, STARRT and Traffic
Management Plan
– Keep unauthorized persons clear of the work area.
– Make sure spotters and traffic marshals are in a protected zone
– Take action against anyone who does not follow the rules
Do Not Forget !!!

In a battle between you and the


machine; the machine will always win!
Responsibilities
Traffic Marshals
– Direct truck drivers to the loading point
– Stay in the protected zone - Don't stand in the Line Of Fire
– Don't turn your back to any truck or loader when leaving
the protected zone
– Maintain Eye contact with drivers and operators

Never take for granted that equipment operators can see you!

STAY OUT OF THE LINE OF FIRE


Responsibilities
Drivers and Operators
• Know the where about of all the workers adjacent to your
equipment
• Follow the instructions of the spotter and traffic marshal
• be aware of where your ‘blind spots’ are
• stop operation of your equipment when anyone enters the
hazard zone, swing zone or a blind spot
• No feet on ground
Considerations for your safety
• Don't leave your position until properly relieved
• Don't stand near equipment
• Don't stand in a group
• Don't make unneeded conversation
• Don't read or daydream on duty
• Don't listen to music or use ear phones
• Don't stand between truck and other equipment
• If you have a doubt, STOP the work
• Do not use mobile phones!

Notify the supervisor when drivers or operators


don’t obey signals.
Controlling vehicle movements

 Do not leave the protected zone - maintain eye


contact with driver.
 Spotter should NEVER be positioned behind
equipment or trucks
 Only ONE person should give directions – if unsure of
signal - stop

either by direct sight or
