MINOR RESEARCH PROJECT
ABSTRACT
• Procrastination among secondary school students
Delaying their tasks and assignments until the last minutes.
• Negative impact on students academic performance.
• Effective interventions to help students to overcome
procrastination.
• Strategies to overcome procrastination and to achieve
academic success.
INTRODUCTION
• Procrastination is the act of delaying or putting off tasks until the last
minutes or past their deadline.
• 2007 meta analysis published on psychological bulletin shows 80 to
95 percentage of students procrastinate
• Linked to factors such as;
1. Forgetting about the work
2. Lack of clarity about the desired outcome
Confused by homework or don‘t know exactly what is expected of them
3. Perfectionism/ fear of failure

Something that is being forced on them by unreasonable teacher or
authoritarian parents
• Distraction
• Social media influence, family problems, mental stress etc...
• Time management
• Understanding the causes and effects to develop effective strategies to
overcome it.

BACKGROUND STUDIES
• Procrastination among students in secondary school is a widespread
issue that has been studied extensively in educational psychology.
• Procrastination can also lead to a cycle of negative emotions, where
students feel guilty or ashamed about their procrastination, which
further hinders their ability to complete tasks on time.
• Understanding the causes and consequences of procrastination is
crucial for developing effective interventions to help students
overcome this issue.
• Support for students in developing a healthier study habits.
NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE
• Procrastination negatively affects the performance of the students
while they postpone their assignments and also can’t perform well in
their exams properly.
• Need of motivation to overcome procrastination and engaging on their
studies.
• By overcoming procrastination , students can develop better time
management skills.
• It leads to a greater sense of accomplishment and satisfaction with
their work.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
• Kim( 2021) studied on relationship between procrastination and
academic performance. A meta analysis, a sample of 38,529
participants to synthesize the findings. Results indicate that
procrastination was negatively correlated with academic performance.
HYPOTHESIS
• There exist procrastination attitude in secondary school students.

• Procrastination attitude decreases academic performance and


achievement.

• Students with better time management skills may be less likely to


procrastinate.
OBJECTIVES
• To analyse the presence of procrastination attitude among secondary
school students.
• To assess how procrastination affects different aspects of academic
performance.
• To identify influence of procrastination among different gender among
the secondary school students.
• To identify the factors contributing procrastination among students.
VARIABLES – DEFENITION
• Variables- Procrastination on students academic performance.

Procrastination in the context of student’s academic performance


refers to the tendency to delay or postpone academic tasks, such as
studying for exams, completing assignments, or preparing for
presentations, despite knowing that this behaviour may lead to
negative consequences. These consequences can include lower
grades, increased stress and anxiety, and overall poorer academic
performance.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHEDOLOGY
• Method – Survey
Survey is a method of gathering information from a group of individuals by
asking them questions.
• Sample – secondary school students ( 8 std)
• Tool – Questionnaire
• Statistics used – Percentage analysis
LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
• The present study was limited among secondary students of a single
school.

• The investigator selects the sample of only few students.

• The study was limited in Alappuzha district only.

Introduction and review – 2 week
• Tool construction – 2 weeks
• Data collection – 2 weeks
• Analysis – 1 week
