“ Academic Procrastination of Higher Secondary School
Students”

ABSTRACT
In the present study, academic procrastination is an act of
deliberately delaying academic tasks such as doing homework, preparing for
examination, project work and co curricular activities needlessly to the last
minute of a given time frame in fear of making mistakes and feel discomfort
out of this. Procrastination have a detrimental effect on the academic
performance of higher secondary school students because of reduced
motivation, increased stress, distraction from their curricular activities due to
the influence of several digital platforms. It is important for the students to
develop good time management skills, strategies to avoid procrastination in
order to achieve their academic development as well as future goals.
INTRODUCTION
Background studies
• 2007 meta analysis published on psychological bulletin shows 80 to
95 percentage of students procrastinate
• Studies shows the factors affecting procrastination are;
1. Forgetting about the work
2. Lack of clarity about the desired outcome
3. Perfectionism/ fear of failure
4. Resistance
5 Distraction
6. Improper Time management
Need and significance
• Need of motivation to overcome procrastination and engaging on their
activities.
• By overcoming procrastination , students can develop better time
management skills.
• Reduction of stress and overall well – being.
• Enhanced self – discipline and motivation.
• It leads to a greater sense of accomplishment and satisfaction with
their work.
• Procrastination can sometimes lead to creative thinking and problem
solving when faced with a deadline, students may come up with
innovative solutions or ideas.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study is entitled as “ Academic Procrastination of Higher


Secondary School Students”
OPERATIONAL DEFENITION OF KEY TERMS

. Academic procrastination
In the present study academic procrastination is an act of
deliberately delaying academic tasks such as doing homework,
preparing for examination, project work and co curricular activities
needlessly to the last minute of a given time frame in fear of making
mistakes and feel discomfort out of this.
2. Higher Secondary school students
In the present study secondary school students mean
students studying in XI and XII standards of Kerala state.I
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
• Kim( 2021) studied on relationship between procrastination and
academic performance. A meta analysis, a sample of 38,529 participants
to synthesize the findings. Results indicate that procrastination was
negatively correlated with academic performance.

• Javady and Mahmoudi ( 2020) examined the relationship between


perceived parenting styles and academic procrastination and fear of
success. The sampling is multistage cluster and 331 subjects were
selected. The results showed that there was a positive and significant
relation between perceived and authoritarian parenting styles and
academic procrastination.
HYPOTHESIS
• The academic procrastination of higher secondary school students
varies.
• There is a significant difference in the academic procrastination of
higher secondary school students with respect to their :
1. Type of school ( Govt / Aided)
2. Subject stream ( Science / humanities)
3. Social media usage ( 2 hours and above per day / below 2 hours per day )
OBJECTIVES
• To find out the level of academic procrastination of higher secondary
school students.
• To compare the academic procrastination of higher secondary school
students with respect to their:
• Type of school ( Govt / Aided)
• Subject stream ( Science / humanities)
1. Social media usage ( 2 hours and above per day / below 2 hours per day )
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHEDOLOGY
• Method - The investigator adopted normative survey method for
collecting relevant data for the present study.
• Variable - Academic Procrastination
• Sample - The present study includes 60 higher secondary school
students studying in standard Xll of Kerala state.
• Sampling - The samples selected through random sampling technique
• Tool - Academic procrastination scale : The investigator with the help
of supervising teacher developing a academic procrastination scale to
find out the level of academic procrastination of higher secondary
school students.

1. t – test (test of significance of difference between means of two
independent variables)
DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
• The study is confined to higher secondary school students
• Due to practical considerations , the study is to be confined to two
schools in Cherthala taluk
• The study is confined to schools which follow Kerala state syllabus
only
• Due to lack of time, the selection of components of academic
procrastination of higher secondary school students are restricted
• The study is confined to three sub variables, that are type of school,
subject stream and Social media usage
TIME FRAME OF MINOR PROJECT
Introduction and review – 2 week
• Tool construction – 2 weeks
• Data collection – 2 weeks
• Analysis – 1 week
• Final report – 2 week
• Total time – 3 ½ month
