Unit 1.2: Breathing
Learning Objectives
OBJECTIVES 1. Describe how the structure of the human
respiratory system is related to its function of gas
exchange and understand the difference between
breathing and respiration.

Success Criteria:
I can:
1. Describe how the gas exchange (respiratory) system
inhales and exhales.
2. Look at diagrams or microscope images of the anatomy
of selected organisms such as single-celled organisms,
worms, larvae and observe that they do not contain lungs.

Present New Information

Inhaling and Exhaling

Inhaling:
• Intercostal Muscles CONTRACT
• Ribs Move UP and OUT
• Volume INCREASES
• Pressure DECREASES
• Air Moves IN
• Diaphragm pulls down

What Happens During

Exhaling?
