RHYTHMIC FUNDAMENTALS
ELEMENTS OF RHYTHM
Every individual has
RHYTHM. It is found in all
of nature and is natural to
every individual. RHYTHM
IS MOST CLEARLY SEEN
THROUGH DANCE.
Rhythm is the regular

unaccented beats.

UNDERLYING BEAT
OR PULSE BEAT
BEAT refers to
the underlying
pulse of the
music. Most
music has a
steady, recurring
beat to it.
MEASURE
 It refers to a single
unit of time
featuring a specific
number of beats
played at a
particular tempo.
MEASURE
 It is usually musically
paired with a second
measure. These two
measures equal a total
of 8 counts which is
why dancers count in
sets of 8.

 It is a succession of
musical events
contained within a
single metric unit
that corresponds
to a single main
beat.
