Pronoun + ‘be’ verb and contractions
Examples:
• I am a student. ------ I’m a student.
• He is a student. ----- He’s a student.
• She is a student. ---- She’s a student.
• It is a cat. ------------- It’s a cat.
• You are a student. – You’re a student
• They are students. – They’re students.
• We are students. ---- We’re students.
Practice saying out loud:
Example:
I’m an Engineer. (remember Engineer starts with a vowel so we will use
‘an’ instead of ‘a’)
I’m a Maldivian.
I’m a man.
I’m an animal lover.
Subjective Pronouns / ‘be’ verb, contractions & how to use them with the word ‘not’
Not means negative or it’s not true. It is put after the contraction.
Examples
• I’m not a student. (Note that ‘not’ and ‘a’ are pronounced as one word, ‘not-a’)
• He’s not a student.
• She’s not a student.
• It’s not a dog. (remember ‘it’ is used for a thing, place or animal)
• You’re not a student.
• They’re not students.
• We’re not students.
Practice saying out loud
• I’m not a boy. I’m not a girl.
• He’s not a boy. He’s not a man.
• She’s not a girl. She’s not a woman.
• It’s not a chair. It’s not a cat.
• You’re not a singer. You’re not a friend.
• We’re not sisters. We’re not brothers.
• They’re not people. They’re not cars.
