WHAT IS POLLUTION?
Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment
that cause adverse change.

Pollution of all kinds can have negative effects on the environment and
wildlife.

The word pollution generally implies that the contaminants have an

anthropogenic source .
AIR POLLUTION
WHAT IS AIR POLLUTION?

Air pollution is the contamination of air due

to the presence of substances in the
atmosphere that are harmful to the health
of humans and other living beings, or cause
damage to the climate or to materials.
This pollution looks like soot, containing millions of tiny particles, floating in the
air.
This pollution causes respiratory illnesses.
The air pollutants may be carcinogenic .

COMPOSITION OF AIR
• Air consists of 78% nitrogen, 21%
oxygen and 1 % other gases and water
vapour

• The water vapour or moisture content of air

varies.

• The composition of air varies from one

place to the next and even varies
depending on whether it is day or night.
AIR POLLUTION MEASUREMENT

Air pollution measurement is the process of collecting and measuring the

components of air pollution,. The earliest devices used to measure pollution
include rain gauges , Ringelmann charts for measuring smoke, and simple
soot and dust collectors known as deposit gauges. Modern air pollution
measurement is automated and carried out using many different devices and
techniques. These range from simple test tubes known as diffusion tubes,
highly chemical and physical sensors that give almost real-time pollution
measurements, which are used to generate air quality indexes.
HOW IS AIR QUALITY MEASURED?

Air quality is measured with the Air Quality Index, or

AQI. The AQI works like a thermometer that runs
from 0 to 500 degrees. However, instead of showing
changes in the temperature, the AQI is a way of
showing changes in the amount of pollution in the
air.
