BOILING POINT OF ANTIFREEZE COOLANT
The temperature at which coolant boils depends on 3 factors:
1. ALTITUDE at which cooling system operates

2. AMOUNT and TYPE of ANTIFREEZE in coolant mixture

3. PRESSURE at which cooling system operates

Relationship between pressure/temperature and altitude for water (without antifreeze)

WHAT CAN GO WRONG?
CYLINDER LINER PITTING
CAUSE: Cylinder liner vibration

EFFECT: Coolant boils, bubble implosion causes cast iron liner pitting.

Cavitation Corrosion
空化腐蚀
Pitting
气蚀

RESULT: Eventual perforation of cylinder liner will cause loss of

compression in cylinder and coolant / oil mixing.

Traditionally, HD diesel engine coolant needs to be “Pre-Charged” or

“Fully Formulated” with NITRITE (and MOLYBDATE) to help prevent
liner damage.

HOW HEAT AFFECTS SILICONE VS
EPDMAs shown in the diagram, silicone rubber and EPDM vary when exposed to varying degrees of heat.
Six 58mm circles of silicone sponge alongside a standard piece of EPDM sponge, both were 6mm thick, were cut from the original
pieces and then placed in the oven at different temperatures. The results were then recorded as follows:
