City Liveability

Presentation-
Copenhagen

By Ian Lau
Where is it located?

• Copenhagen is the capital city of Denmark, Europe and is located on the Zealand
and Amager Islands.
• It was originally a small Viking fishing village called Havn.
• The Danish name refers to the historical use and the location of the city,
Køpmannæhafn, meaning ‘merchant’s harbor’.
What does the
city look like

• The city has many colourful

buildings and castles.
• Due to the climate grey skies
are the norm.
• The northern suburbs are the
richest with many mansions
in it.
What is liveability?

• According to the Cambridge dictionary, liveability is the degree to which a place

is good or suitable to live in.
• Liveability can be divided into several categories, water, food, housing,
transport, healthcare, education and safety.
Map
Population and
age distribution

• The population of
Copenhagen as of last
year is 1,381,000.
• In Copenhagen, the two
most common age groups
are form 20-29 and from
30-39.
Why is Copenhagen
liveable
• Clean water- The water of Copenhagen is clean and there
is no risk swimming in it, unusual for a city that large.
• Less pollution- since 1990 carbon emissions have reduced
by 25 percent. Bicycles make out a huge portion of
Copenhagen's visual appearance. When visiting
Copenhagen, you will not only see bicycles parked at
every station and in every street. The most impressing fact
is the vast number of Copenhageners on bikes that are an
integrated part of traffic and the urban infrastructure.
Why is Copenhagen
liveable (cont.)
• Infrastructure- It has its own train network, the S train with 84
stations citywide, with 17 new shops in the underground Metro as
of 2019.
• Education- the public education system is free from primary to
higher education. Although compulsory education is only up to 16
years of age, more than 80% of students go on to study tertiary
education.
• Healthcare- All residents in Copenhagen will get free healthcare if
they are registered residents.
• Safety- There are no wars/civil violence in Copenhagen now.
• Green areas- Copenhagen has many green areas and recreational
spaces and part of its plan to be the first carbon neutral capital
city.
Other facts

• Copenhagen was once the home of Hans Christian Andersen, the writer of books
like ‘The Ugly Duckling’, ‘The Little Mermaid’, ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’
and ‘The Snow Queen’.
• It is popular to swim in the sea at a cold winter's day. Brr!
• It also used to be the capital of Norway and Sweden as the 3 countries were once
part of a huge alliance.
• Two of the oldest amusement parks are in Copenhagen.
