TIME DISTANCE SPEED

Calculating DISTANCE,
SPEED and Time
SPEE
- is a scalar quantity that refers to “how fast an
D
object is moving”. Speed can be thought of as
the rate by which an object covers distance.
• meters per second (m/s),
• kilometers per hour (km/h), and
• miles per hour (mph) (mph).

Speed = Distance/Time
DISTANC
– is the total length between two points or
E
position.
• millimeters (mm),
• centimeters (cm),
• meters (m), and
• kilometers (km

Distance = Speed × Time

TIME
– is the measured period during which an
action, process or condition exists or continues.

• second/s (sec.),
• minute/s (min.) and
• hour/s (hrs.)

Time = Distance/Speed
Example 1:

“Roy’s bicycle can run 983 meters an hour, if he

drives 5 hours, how far will go?”

• Speed - 983m/hr
• Time - 5 hrs

• Distance - ?
Example 2:

“Alex wants to travel a 390 miles town; his car can run 60
miles an hour. How long will it take Alex to reach the
town?”

• Distance – 390 miles

• Time - ?
• Speed – 60 miles/hour
Example 3:

“A dog running 50 meters in 10 seconds has enough inertia to

move in its direction and react a desired point fast enough due to
the amount of inertia in its body.”

• Distance – 50 meters
• Time – 10 seconds
• Speed - ?

Directions: Calculate the DISTANCE, SPEED and TIME.

1. 2. 3.
D-? T-? S-?
S – 40 km/hr D – 200 km D – 10m
T – 3 hours S – 20km/hr T – 30 seconds
An easy way to remember the distance, speed and time
equation is to put the letters into a triangle. The triangles will help
you remember these 3 formulas:
A. Complete the table.

Distance (km) Speed (kph) Time (hr.)

210 60
80 3.5
50 100
B. Complete the table.

Distance (km) Speed (kph) Time (hr.)

40 1¼

120 1.5
200 80
C. Complete the table.
Distance
(km) Speed (kph) Time (hr.)
20 3.5
150 60
80 1.25
D. Complete the table.
Speed
Vehicle Distance (km) Time (hrs)
(km/hr)
Motorbike 30 4
Car 40 180
Van 42 12
Bus 135 5
E. Group Activity:
Do the following. Write your answer and complete solution in
your answer sheet.

Group 1. Calculate the Group 2. How long does it Group 3. Calculate the speed
distance that you would take to travel; if you travelled:
travel if you drove for: 1. 100 km at 20km/h? 1. 95 km in 2 hours
1. 2 hours at 30 km/h 2. 180 km at 45 km/h? 2. 180 kms in 3 hours
2. 7 hours at 65 km/h 3. 250 km at 50 km/h? 3. 48 km in 2 hours
3. 21 hours at 46 km/h
Assignment:
Read and solve the following problems. Write your answer and
complete solution on your notebook.

1. A man rides the bike with the speed of 60 km in 3 hours.

Calculate the speed of the bike?

2. Lilly is driving a scooter with the speed of 20 km/hr for 2

hours. How much distance will she travel?
