What is the meaning of narrative
analysis?
• Narrative analysis refers to a cluster of
analytic methods for interpreting texts or
visual data that have a storied form.

Approaches to Narrative Analysis

1. Inductive (Exploratory) Approach:

Involves starting with specific observations and

patterns and then developing broader themes and
theories based on those observations

Starts with a pre-existing theory or framework and

then looks for evidence within the narrative to
support or confirm that theory.

The Types of Narrative Analysis

1. Structural Analysis: This type focuses on the organization and

elements of narrative.
2. Thematic Analysis: It explores the underlying themes and
messages conveyed in a narrative.
3. Contextual Analysis: Focuses on understanding the social and
cultural context in which a narrative is situated.
4. Narrative interviews: This involve conversations with
participants to elicit their personal stories and experiences.

2. Identify the key elements: Paying attention to the key

structure of the narrative, including the beginning,
middle, and end. Look for any significant turning

6. Interpret and draw conclusions: Based on your analysis,

interpret the narrative and draw conclusions about its deeper
