INTRODUCTION
DEFINITION
The National Centre for Complementary
and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)
defines CAM as a group of diverse medical
and health care systems, practices and
products that are not generally considered
part of conventional medicine.
DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN
COMPLEMENTARY
AND ALTERNATIVE
MEDICINE
CLASSIFICATIONS OF
COMPLEMENTARY AND
ALTERNATIVE
MEDICINE THERAPY
1.ALTERNATIVE MEDICAL
SYSTEMS
AYURVEDA
Ayurveda, which literally
means “the science of life”, is a
natural healing system
developed in India. Some of the
primary Ayurvedic treatments
include diet, exercise,
meditation, herbs, massage,
exposure to sunlight, and
controlled breathing.
SIDDHA
This form of medicine was professed and
practiced by siddhar who wrote their recipes on
palm leaves. Siddha medicine was developed by
outstanding Dravidians. Preparations are made
mainly out of the parts of the plants and trees
such as leaves, bark, stem, root, etc, but include
also mineral.
UNANI-TIBBI

Unani-tibbi denotes Arabic or Islamic medicine,

also known as prophetic medicine. It
traditionally makes use of a variety of
techniques including diet, herbal treatments,
manipulative therapies, and surgery.
HOMEOPATHY

Homeopathy is a form
of alternative medicine
in which practitioners
treat patients using
highly diluted preparations.
Homeopathic remedies are prepared by serial
dilution with shaking by forceful striking on an
elastic body, which homeopaths term succussion
NATUROPATHY
Naturopathy is a wide array of pseudoscientific
practices branded as "natural", "non-invasive",
or promoting "self-healing" are employed by its
practitioners.
primary importance in the naturopathic
treatment of disease:
• Nutrition and Dietetic
• Fasting
• Structural Adjustment
• Hydrotherapy
• Healthy lifestyle
• Education
2. MIND-BODY
INTERVENTIONS
MEDITATION
RELAXATION TECHNIQUES
GUIDED IMAGERY
BIOFEEDBACK
HYPNOTHERAPY
3. BIOLOGICALLY
BASED THERAPY
NUTRITIONAL THERAPY
Nutritional therapy involves the use of specific
dietary nutrients in order to improve health. A
macronutrient approach involves tailoring and
adjusting the mix
of carbohydrates,
proteins, fats, and
fiber in your diet.
HERBAL MEDICINE
Herbal medicine consists of natural and
biologically-based practices, interventions and
products to treat a variety of physical or
emotional conditions. Often these
are relatively minor in nature,
such as nausea, coughs, colds,
or diarrhea although some
herbalists also attempt to
treat long term or chronic conditions, such as
ulcers, arthritis, or heart problems.
4. MANIPULATIVE AND
BODY BASED METHODS
YOGA
CHIROPRACTIC
OSTEOPATHY
MASSAGE
THERAPY
5. ENERGY THERAPY
BIOFIELD THERAPIES
They are intended to affect energy fields that
purportedly surround and penetrate the
human body. The existence of such fields has
not yet been scientifically proven. Some
forms of energy therapy manipulate biofields
by applying pressure and/or manipulating the
body by placing the hands in, or through,
these fields. Examples include Qigong, Reiki,
and Therapeutic touch.
BIOELECTROMGNETIC
THERAPY
Bioelectromagnetic force or charge is a
fundamental power of the universe. Since all
chemical, biological and molecular
interactions are fundamentally
electromagnetic, an
Externally applied
EM field might be
expected to have
profound biological effects at many levels.
6. OTHER THERAPIES
TRADITIONAL CHINESE
MEDICINE
It based on the belief that qi (the body’s vital
energy) flows along meridians (channels) in
the body and keeps a person’s spiritual,
emotional, mental, and physical health in
balance. It aims to restore the body’s balance
between two forces called yin and yang.
ACUPUNCTURE
These therapies stimulate specific areas on
the skin by inserting small needles or
applying heat, pressure, or massage.
Acupuncture is based on the belief in a
universal life force or energy field – “Qi” —
that flows throughout the body. Acupuncture
has been used to treat a variety of conditions,
including pain, high blood pressure, arthritis,
gastrointestinal problems, and addictive
disorders.
AROMATHERAPY
Aromatherapy uses essential oils from plants to
treat various problems such as headaches,
muscle and rheumatic pain, digestive disorders,
skin conditions, or stress and anxiety. These
concentrated oils that have been distilled from a
variety of natural substances may be inhaled or
massaged into the skin.
CURANDERISMO
Curanderismo is a traditional Mexican American
healing system that holistically treats disorders
through religious, spiritual and health-related
means.
SPIRITUAL THERAPIES
Spiritual therapies are therapies
that focus on deep, often
religious beliefs and feelings,
including a person’s sense of
peace, purpose, connection to
others, and beliefs about the
meaning of life.
Examples:
Intercessory prayer
Spiritual healing
MUSIC THERAPY

Music therapy is the use of music and/or

elements of music (like sound, rhythm and
harmony) to accomplish goals, like
reducing stress or improving quality of life.
HUMOR AND LAUGHTER
THERAPY
Humor therapy uses the
power of smiles and laughter
to aid healing. Humor
therapy helps you find ways
to make yourself smile and
laugh more. Some hospitals
now have humor carts that
provide funny materials for
people of any age.
