• Illustrates the permutation of objects.

• List the possible ways a certain task or
activity can be done.
• Appreciate permutations as vital part of
one’s life.
DETERMINING THE
NUMBER OF POSSIBLE
OUTCOMES
A. Systematic Listing

B. Tree Diagram

C. Two Way Table or Table of Outcomes

D. Fundamental Counting Principle

PROBLEM
Princess invited her close friends Josh, Mark, and
Carla to her 18th birthday which will be held at
Shangri-La Mactan. She prepared a special table with
chairs placed in a row to be occupied by her three
friends.
1.List all possible sitting arrangements.
2.In how many ways can they be seated in a row?
A. Systematic Listing

C. Two-way table or Table of Outcomes
Ex. How many possible outcomes are there when
you tossed two coins?
Fundamental Counting Principles
If there are m ways to do one thing, n ways to do
another and o ways to do another, then there are
m x n x o of doing those things.

Problem #1
Sarah Geronimo is a popular concert
artist. Suppose she is planning a
concert tour in three cities-Manila,
Cebu, and Davao. In how many ways
can she arrange her tour schedule? Use
tree diagram to show your answer.
Problem #2

Two dice are rolled. What are the

possible outcomes? Use two-way table
to express your answer.
Permutation
Permutation
is an arrangement of all or part of a set of
objects with proper regard to order.
Examples:
• possible choices you have in creating your g-cash PW
• arranging 5 different books in a shelf
• possible number of plate numbers can LTO create.
Problem # 1
Suppose you secure your bike using a combination lock. Later, you
realized that you forgot the 4-digit code. You only remembered that
the code contains the digit 1, 3, 4, and 5. List all the possible code
out of the given digits. Determine the number of permutations made.

Quiz No. 3.1
1. Suppose an experiment consists of tossing a coin four
times. How many different outcomes are possible? Use
tree diagram.
2. At Maria’s Pizza, you can order pizza with thin or thick
crust and with any of the three toppings available
(Hawaiian, Pepperoni or Beef). The pizzas come in small,
medium and large sizes. How many ways you can order a
one-topping pizza? Use listing method/tree diagram to
