TRIAL ASSEMBLY AND

ERECTION OF OPEN WEB

GIRDERS
• 45.7 M
• RDSO Drawing: B-17181series
• Weight of the Girder: 138.346 MT
• Overall length 47850 mm
• Effective length - C / C bearing 47240 mm
• Height of girder at center- 8117.5 mm
• Truss centre - 5400 mm
45.7m Welded Open Web Girder
SELECTION OF ASSEMBLY SITE

• The assembly of Girder has to be done on a

firm and levelled platform.
• Hence, concrete platforms are most suitable
for this.
ERECTION FACILITIES

• Road mobile cranes are utilized for erection.

• Gantries and hoists can also be used.
ASSEMBLY

• The bed for assembly can be made with

beams and packing plates.
• The bed should be checked and levelled with
water level.
Contd…

• Bottom chord 2 nos. are laid from one end

with bottom gussets and the Cross Girders
assembled in between bottom chords, also
Stringers in between Bottom Chords.
Contd..

• Joints shall normally be made by

• filling not less than 50% of the holes with
• service bolts and barrel drifts in the ratio of
• four to one. The service bolts are to be fully
• tightened up as soon as the joint is
• assembled.
Contd..
• Similarly the successive bottom chords are laid
with cross girders and stringers.
• Bottom laterals are assembled in position.
• The cross and diagonal measurements are checked
and all the black bolts tightened.
• Camber jacks are inserted over the platform below
every bottom panel joints in such a way that all the
joints are in run out condition except the central
jack.
Contd..

• Levels are taken at the top of bottom chord at

every nodal point.
• All the vertical member are erected at the
nodal points and diagonals are fixed
subsequently with temporary gussets (gusset
holes are drilled for the camber profile).
• Bottom chords are checked to ensure to be in
the same level.
Contd..

• Camber is provided to all panel joints of the

bottom chords as per the camber diagram by
lowering the jacks at the ends, keeping the
central jack without disturbing.
• Camber readings are checked and adjusted
for the correctness.
Contd..
• Top chord members are erected from centre
to outwards so that they are elastically
strained.
• Temporary gussets are replaced with
permanent gussets before drifting.
• Drifts are driven with hammer. Trueness of
holes in the adjacent group of holes is
checked.
• Care should be taken so that the holes are not
damaged (elongated or teared).
Contd..
• Chain pulley block is used to for assembling
the members to keep the joints in position.
• End rakers are erected in the last, the upper
end is first connected and drifted, then the
connection is made at the lower end.
• Sway bracings, top lateral bracings and portal
bracings are erected subsequently.
• All the joints are tightened and drifted.
Contd..

• Jacks are lowered duly keeping the end

supports in position.
• Dead load camber is checked by levelling
instrument, also with water level. The
measurements are recorded.
PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED
AND REMEDIAL MEASURES
• Care is to be taken to drive the drifts and close
supervision is required to avoid elongation or tearing
of drilled holes in the gussets and members.
PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED
AND REMEDIAL MEASURES
• Measuring with Levelling instruments may be
a failure due to the poor accuracy in reading
on longer lengths.
• Measuring of camber with a piano wire of 0.5
mm dia. With 10 kg weights at both ends will
be a failure due to sag in longer lengths.

Solution: Water level with a diameter of 6 mm

and length 10 metre longer than the girder
can be used to check the level of the girder.
PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED
AND REMEDIAL MEASURES
• Slight deformation of the chord members.
• Gap between the chord ends at the junctions.

• Solutions: Jacks can be used to lift the floor

system. Chain pulley blocks can be used to
erect the members in position.
