OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the student should
be able to:

a) Define Rational and Irrational Numbers

b) Identify the Operations of Rational and
Irrational Numbers
c) Convert rational number into Standard Form
Direction:

Give students a list of numbers

and have them estimate if each
number is rational or irrational.
RATIONAL NUMBER
 Rational numbers are numbers which can be expressed
as a fraction and also as positive numbers, negative numbers,
and zero. It can be written as p/q, where q is not equal to zero.

 The word “rational” is derived from the word ‘ratio’

which actually means as a comparison ot two or more values
or integer numbers and is known as a fraction. In simple
word, it is ratio of two integers.
HOW TO CONVERT
RATIONAL NUMBER
INTO STANDARD FORM?
THE BASIC ARITHMETIC OPERATIONS
PERFORMED ON RATIONAL NUMBERS ARE:

• Addition of Rational Numbers ( with same denominators

and with different denominators )
• Subtraction of Rational Numbers ( with same denominators
and with different denominators )
• Multiplication of Rationals Numbers
• Division of Rational Numbers
IRRATIONAL
NUMBER
 are real numbers that cannot be represented
as simple fractions. An irrational number cannot
be expressed as a ratio, such as p/q, where p and q
are integers, q≠0. It cannot be written as a fraction.
PROPERTIES OF IRRATIONAL NUMBERS

1.Addition, subtration, multiplication and division of two

irrational number is may or may not be irrational.
2. Addition of rational and irrational numbers is always irrational.
3. Subtraction of rational and irrational number is always
irrational.
4. Multiplication of a non-zero or rational and irrational is always
irrational.
5. Division of non-zero rational and irrational is always irrational.
Direction: Convert rationl number
into standard form.

1) 10/12
2) 4/6
3) 9/15
4) 25/10
5) 36/18
Direction: Write R if the number is
Rational number and IR if the number is
Irrational.
1) √5
2) 16
3) 25
4) √57
5) √2

irrational numbers.
