Q1. Based on the picture, give five definition of a volcano.
What is a volcano?
A volcano is a crack, opening or hole that
occurs in the earth’s crust, which allows
lava or magma to be expelled from there
along with ash, gases, rocky material and
liquid at high temperature, among other
things found deep in the earth’s crust.
 Magma chamber - Is a large pool of liquid rock at the
base of a volcano beneath the surface of the Earth.

What are the different parts of volcano?  Layers of lava and ash – A large, steep-sided,
symmetrical cone built of alternating layers (strata) of
lava, ash, and cinders.

 Main Vent – Are passageways for which magma and

other pyroclastic materials are ejected.

 Crater - An approximately circular depression or

opening in a volcano caused by volcanic activity.

 Ash – Pyroclastic materials that are spewed together

with magma during a volcanic eruption.

 Lava - It is a molten or partially molten rock (magma)

that has been expelled from the interior of a terrestrial
planet (such as Earth) or a moon onto its surface.

 Secondary Vent – Are smaller outlets through which

magma escapes.
• What is the different types of
volcano?
 Cinder Cone Volcano - Cinder cone
volcanoes are characterized by eruptions
of lava fountains.
 Composive Volcano - also called
stratovolcanoes are named for their
composition. These volcanoes are built
from layers, or strata, of pyroclastic
material, including lava, pumice,
volcanic ash, and tephra.
 Shield Volcano - A shield volcano is a
type of volcano named for its low
profile, resembling a shield lying on the
ground.
 Lava Dome - A lava dome or plug dome
is a round-shaped mound created by the
eruption of viscous lava by a volcano.
CLASSIFICATIONS OF ACTIVE AND INACTIVE
VOLCANOES FOUND IN THE PHILIPPINES?

volcano that has had at
least one eruption
during the past 10,000

the near future, but
might again sometime
in the future.
Classification of Volcanoes

Inactive volcano
- A volcano that
will likely never
erupt again.
