Typhoon Formation

Lesson 3
What is a tropical cyclone?
A tropical cyclone is a
general term used for an
intense low-pressure wind
system that brings about
heavy rain.
Parts of a Topical Cyclone
What are the main parts of a
tropical cyclone?
How are tropical cyclone
called in different parts of
the world?
Different names of tropical cyclones
in different parts of the world.

Hurricane
Typhoon
Cyclone
How tropical cyclones are
formed?
How landforms and bodies
of water affect tropical
cyclones?
How landforms and bodies
of water affect tropical
cyclones?
• The more heat and moisture the
storm encounters, the stronger the
storm will grow, the more storms
will form and the greater intensity
of the storm.
• Once a tropical system moves
inland, the storm will usually
weaken rapidly. This is due to the
lack of moisture inland and the
lower heat sources over land.
Mountains also affect tropical cyclones by interrupting
their movement and the flow of prevailing surface winds.
What is the agency that
provides weather-related
information?
PAGASA
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and
Astronomical Services Administration

provides daily weather synopsis and forecast for the

Philippines, covering the effects of northeast monsoon,
easterlies, and flash floods.

releases tropical cyclone warnings in the form of

Public Storm Warning Signals.
What are the Philippine Public
Storm Warning Signals?
Philippine Area of
Responsibility
Lesson 4
Why do typhoons occur
frequently in the
Philippines?
• Philippine is located near the equator
• Its surrounding ocean water has high temperature
• Has an annual temperature of 26.6 degree Celsius
• Tropical cyclones develop in the
late summer and early fall, when
the ocean is at its warmest,
providing moisture and heat to
the air.
• They usually form in areas near
warm bodies of water, such as in
Western Pacific.
• Philippines is located near the
equator and has an annual
average temperature of 26.6
degree Celsius.
• Typhoon originate in the region
of Northern Mariana Islands of
the Pacific Ocean.
Philippine Area of Responsibility
• A PAR is an area in the Northwestern Pacific where the
state weather bureau PAGASA or the Philippine
Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services
Administration, observes weather occurrences.
• PAGASA is the national Agency mandated to provide
flood and typhoon warnings, public weather forecast and
advisories and other specialized information and services
to protect life and properties against natural calamities
• The eastern boundary of the PAR is farther in order to
monitor the area where typhoons that enter the
Philippines develop
• When tropical cyclones enter this area and eventually be
given locally-specific names.
PAR is surrounded by the following six points: 25°N 120°E, 25°N 135°E, 5°N
135°E, 5°N 115°E, 15°N 115°E, 21°N 120°E
National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council
(NDRRMC)

The National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Council (NDRRMC), formerly known as the
National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC), is a working group of various government, non-
government, civil sector and private sector organizations of the Government of the Republic of the
Philippines established by Republic Act 10121 of 2009. It is administered by the Office of Civil
