WHAT IS SOUTH
AFRICA FLAG
CALLED

The new flag is unique in combining six colours; traditional flags had two or three
colours, and some modern flags four or five colours. Intentionally, however, and in
contrast to most other modern national flags, the new design for South Africa explicitly
avoids any specific symbolic association for the colours, as this was considered “treading
on dangerous ground.” The flag, intended as temporary, was confirmed by the 1996
constitution as permanent, based on the overwhelming popular support it had gained and
on the optimistic spirit of South Africans regarding their national future it is called
"Oranje, Blanje, Blou" "Union flag" "Apartheid flag"

WHAT IS APARTHEID ?
• Apartheid is a segregationist political system set up by the white minority in South Africa in 1948 and abolished in
1991 under pressure from the international community and following the fight of blacks, represented in particular
by Nelson Mandela.
• The word Apartheid means in Afrikaans “separation, segregation” and derives from the French “apart”. It's a racist
political system that was to take away all black rights.
ESTABLISHMENT
OF APARTHEID
Presentation title 32
ESTABLISHMENT OF APARTHEID
• Establishment of apartheid
• The white population , mainly descended from Dutch, British, French and Germans, who settled in the country from 1652, ruled
and owned the majority of agricultural land and prohibited the black population full civil rights within South Africa. The black
population lived in bantustans spread over 13% of the territory according to ethnicity and in the townships, black ghettos on the
outskirts of white towns. Alongside these two population groups, half-breeds and Indians enjoyed intermediate rights between the
privileged rights of whites and the residual rights of blacks.
• During Apartheid, blacks did not have the right to vote; whites and blacks could not marry together; blacks had to carry with them
an internal passport, specially designed for them which they used to move around; access to public places was restricted based on
skin color
