LANGUAGE LEARNING MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT

DEFINITION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

• Instructional Materials are defined as

resources that organize and support
instruction, such as textbooks, tasks, and
supplementary resources (Remillard &
Heck, 2014).
DEFINITION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

• According to Faize and Dahan (2011) instructional materials

are print and non-print items that are designed to impact
information to students in the educational process. They include
items such as prints, textbooks, magazines, newspapers, slides,
pictures, workbooks, electronic media, among others
ROLES OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

1. They provide a way for teachers to

present information to their students in
a more organized and concise manner.

2. They can serve as a tool for assessment,

helping teachers gauge student
understanding of concepts
BENEFITS OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
To the Learners:
1. Participate in the class actively.
2. Improve learners’ understanding and
retention of the material.
3. Boost learners' enthusiasm.
4. Increase the learners' self-assurance and
self-realization.
5. Encourage learners to have a good mindset
BENEFITS OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

To the Teachers:
1. Relieve teachers’ burdens of developing educational materials.
2. Make learning communication more effective.
3. Make them no longer reliant on textbooks in their classes.
4. Make them switch from being an instructor to being a facilitator.
5. Enhance their ability to incorporate technology into their strategy.
BENEFITS OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

To the Teaching-Learning Process:

1. Assist in the delivery of subject materials.
2. Make the process of learning becomes more participatory.
3. Give a hands-on learning experience.
4. Develop learning retention.
5. Enhance cooperative learning.
TYPES OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

• Projected Display
• Non-Projected Display
• Printed and Duplicated Materials
• Audio Materials
• Film and Video Materials
• Computer-Mediated Materials
PRINCIPLES OF MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT

1. Materials should achieve impact.

2. Materials should help learners to feel at ease.
3. Materials should help learners to develop confidence.
4. Materials should require and facilitate learners’ self-investment.
5. Materials should consider that learners differ in learning styles.
6. Materials should consider that learners differ in affective attitudes.
7. Materials should not rely too much on controlled practice.
8. Materials should provide opportunities for outcome feedback.
FACTORS AFFECTING MATERIALS PREPARATION

1.Understanding the Operational Functionality

2.Teacher’s Knowledge
3.Student Population
4.Time
5.Lack of Supply of Materials
6.Lack of Funds
7.Non-availability of Resource Room
8.Poor Handling of Materials
9.Poor Condition
FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN WRITING
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

1. UNDERSTANDING - requires matching the materials to the learners’ abilities and

prior knowledge.
2. STRUCTURING OR CLARIFYING - involves organizing the material so that it
is clear to the students.
3. SEQUENCING - arrangement of the materials to provide for continuous and
cumulative learning. There are four basic ways of sequencing a material: simple
to complex, parts to whole, whole to parts, and chronological arrangements.
4. BALANCING- require establishing vertical and horizontal balance or
relationships.
FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN WRITING
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

5. EXPLAINING - the way headings, terms, illustrations, and summary exercises

are integrated with the content.
6. PACING - refers to how much and how quickly the lessons in the textbooks are
presented.
7. REVIEWING - refers to the extent to which the material allows students to link
new ideas to old concepts in the form of a review.
8. ELABORATING - The idea is to provide in the textbook opportunities for
students to transform information from one form to another, and to apply new
information to new knowledge.
9. TRANSFER OF LEARNING - may be concept-related, inquiry-related, learner-
related, or utilization-related.
