 When we write in English we use the 26 letters of the alphabet…

… but, when we speak, we use more than 26 sounds in English. In


fact, there are over 40 sounds in English. And, of course, it is not
easy to show these sounds using the letters of the alphabet.
 Some symbols are the same as letters but some of them are
different. It is very important to know how to write the
pronunciation of words using symbols not only in order to
learn but also in order to understand the pronunciation that
appears in dictionaries (phonetic transcription):
