Relation between Architecture and Iconography

Bhuleshwar Temple

Bhuleshwar Temple is a special place known for its amazing sculptures and carvings. It's different from other Shiva
temples because it combines Islamic and Hemadpanthi styles of construction. This makes it unique and exciting to
visit. The temple has many layers of architecture, which adds to its charm.

The main temple is made of black Basalt stone, while the structures on top, called Shikharas, are made of lime and
gypsum. These were built during the 17th century Maratha-Peshwa period. But the temple is not just about its
beautiful architecture; it also holds historical and religious significance.

is missing. It has a carving of the
goddess.
Before you enter the temple, there's a
stone slab (Shila) that might have
been used for breaking coconuts. The
entrance gate itself is plain but
elegant. As you walk in, there's a
simple hall with another doorway
ahead.
This is designed to make it look like a small temple with just a
Hanuman statue. But wait! Once you step inside, there are two
cleverly hidden staircases on the sides that lead down to the main
chamber, the Garbhgriha.
The pillars and door frames inside Bhuleshwar Temple are ornamented with stunning sculptures of Gandharvas, Yakshas, and
Bharvhakas. These intricate carvings add to the temple's beauty and create a divine atmosphere.

When you step into the area around the temple where you walk in
circles, you'll see a statue of Nandi. It's in its special place with pillars
and walls around it. There are also carvings of dancing elephants at
the bottom of the walls nearby.

The sculptures in the temple show beautiful women and goddesses

expressing different emotions. They are some of the most amazing
sculptures. They show how women in ancient times ornamented
themselves. The Apsaras, especially, dancing, dressing up, and playing
music, leave a lasting impression.
Sadly, many of these sculptures were broken by the Mughal invaders.
The broken pieces tell a story of cruelty and brutality inflicted on these
incredible works of art. It shows the values of those who destroyed
them, but despite the damage, the sculptures still inspire awe.
Walls have carvings depicting stories from the Hindu epics of Ramayana and the Mahabharata etched in mural form. On the panel,
Lord Ganesha is shown in female attire. It is popularly called Ganeshwari or Lambodari or Ganeshyani.
