NATURE OF SCIENCE

PRESENTATION TITLE

• Science is derived from a Latin

word scientia which comes from
the verb scire which means
to know.

PRESENTATION TITLE

Science is also divided into two:

Natural Science and Social Science

• Natural Science – deals with the study of

nature while

• Social Science- deals with the study of

society.

PRESENTATION TITLE Natural Science is divided into: Physical Science
and Biological Science

Physical Science Biological Science

• Chemistry • Biology
• Physics • Ecology

THE SCIENTIFIC
METHOD

• Is a systematic approach to seek answers to a

certain problem or an explanation to a
phenomenon.

• It is a method of observing, thinking, working, and

solving which involves planning and
experimenting with the aids and of important tools.
A SCIENTIFIC METHOD HAS A
FOLLOWING STEPS:

1.Identification and statement of the problem.

2.Gathering relevant information and data/observations.
3.Formulating hypothesis.
4.Testing hypothesis through experimentation.
5.Recording, analyzing, Interpretation of Data or Findings.
6.Drawing a conclusion or generalization.
7.Repeating the work.
THE METRIC SYSTEM
Measurement is the process of finding out how many measuring units there
are in a thing. It is simply the collection of quantitative data.

Quantity Unit/Symbol

Length Meter(m)

Mass Kilogram(kg)

Time Second(s)

Electric Current Ampere(A)

Amount of Substance Mole(mol)

Temperature Kelvin

SIGNIFICANT FIGURES
• A digits of a measurement include both the certain digits and the estimated digits

Rules in determining the number of Significant Figures

1. All nonzero digits are significant.

2. Zeros between nonzero digits are significant. They are captive zeros.

3. Zeros before the first nonzero digit are not significant . They are called leading.

4.Zeros after the last nonzero digit (called trailing zeros) may or not significant depending
on:
- if number have decimal point
11
-if numbers are whole numbers

if a chemical reaction has occurred and thus
there is a change in composition of the
substance.
