History of Čakovec
How the city of Čakovec was created

 It was first mentioned in the 13th century Count-Grof


as a tower ( Čakov turen ) built of wooden Fortress-tvrđava

It's founder is the Hungarian count
Dimitrije or Dmitar Čak , after whom the
town of Čakovec was named.
 A little later, it is mentioned as a
fortress, that is, a fortified city in a
document from June 27, 1333
Who owned Čakovec
 The owners of Čakovec often changed over the years and

Čakovec was ruled by Buzad-Hahold noble families (13th
century), Gising (1267-1350) then Lacković (1350-1397), Reconstructed-> rekonstruiran
Kaniški (1397-1405), Counts of Celje (1405-1461), Ernušt
(1473-1540), Keglević (1540-1546), Turinetti de Prié (1695-
1702), Čikulin (1715-1719), and finally, from 1791 to 1923, Reign->vladavina
Feštetići.

The fortress was reconstructed and upgraded several times,


especially during the reign of the Zrinski (1546-1691) and
Althan (1719-1791) families.
Legends of Čakovec Old Town-Stari Grad

 Legend says that the green Pozoj (dragon) sleeps


under Čakovec.
 It's head is under the Old Town, and it's tail is
under the church of St. Nicholas.
 Caution! You must not wake the dragon!

Scheier's Building

 Scheier's building across from the City Cafe, built


at the end of the 19th century, was the center of the
cultural and entertainment life of Čakovec until the
Second World War.
 The cafe on the ground floor was also a reading
room, and the hall on the upper floor, a luxurious
space with mirrors and crystal chandeliers, the place
of famous festive dances and cinema performances
since 1923, as well as stage shows, dance schools and
formal gatherings.
