History of Golf
History of Golf?
 The history of golf is not very clear, but most sources agree that it
originated in Scothland in the 15th century.
 The modern game of golf, played over 18 holes, evolved from a similar
game called chole.
 In chole, players use a wooden club to hit a stone ball into a hole.
 Golf probably developed from this game by adding additional holes and
eventually switching to a leather-covered ball.
 Some historians also suggest that golf may have some roots in the Roman
game of paganica, which involved hitting a stuffed leather ball with a
stick.
 King James II ban golf (and football) in 1475 because people neglected
their military training and prefered playing golf.
History of Golf?
 It was in 1502 when King James IV of Scotland, a golf player himself,
decided to officially give the royal seal of approval, lifting the ban
and making this game official for the first time since the invention of
golf.
 Queen Mary of Scotland introduced in France the game.
 The rules were written down in 1744, and the first club was formed
by the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith, who decided to host an annual
tournament with prizes for the winners.
 Even though the first reference to what we know today as golf was
mentioned in 1552 in St Andrews.
 The first annual competition with Leith’s rules was not held until
1754.
 St. Andrews became the first ever premier golf club, and in 1834 got
given the title Royal and Ancient” by William IV, King of the United
Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
Basic rules of golf
Basic rules of Golf
 Although the existing golf rules consist of more than 34 rules across 200

the Thirteen Articles.
 A player must play the ball as it lies, unless it is unplayable or out of
bounds.
 A player must identify their golf ball and not touch or move it unless
allowed by the rules.
 A player must tee up their ball behind the tee markers on the first shot of
each hole.
 A player must not seek advice from an opponent or give advice to an
opponent in competitive play.

‘Anyone’ to Enjoy
No discrimination of income

 Even though golf is known as an elitist sport, you

do not pay if you play in municipal (not private
courses).
 In England and Scotland there are a lot of municipal
courses, and it is a sport subsidy by the government
and taught at schools.
 Unfortunately, in Spain it is not the same case and
therefore although there are some cheap courses
like “pitch and puts”, to play in a big course in the
majority of the cases you have to be a member of
the course.
 Moreover, the equipment is not very cheap, but you
can find secondhand equipment in Walla pop or
other places.
No discrimination of age and sex

 Golf does not discriminate in terms of age or gender: golf is

played by men, women and children can all enjoy playing a
game of golf together.

 Players can be as young as 2 (Tiger Woods appeared on

television practicing his golf swing at that age) and as old as
92.

 What other sport can you think of where all the generations
of a family can play and enjoy it all together at the same
time?

 I have played with my grandmother and my grandfather and

I have practice with my little cousin of 5 years old.

 Practicing Golf, therefore, is a great opportunity to spend

time give your relatives of different ages. In other sports
like tennis, basketball and football is realy difficult to play
with people of different ages and levels.
No discrimination of levels: What is handicap system ?
 Golf handicaps are a number that represents the golfer's ability
based on their previous golf round's scores.

 It serves the purpose of comparing your performances with other

golf players.

For men, your golf handicap is generally between 0- 28 , and,

For women, between 0- 36.

Kids have when they start playing higher handicap between 54.
 When you start you have the higher handicap and if you go to
official tournaments and you improve your handicap goes down
gradually.

 Therefore via the handicapping system people from completely
