EARTHQUAKE
Earthquake in the Philippines
Philippines is a country in Southeast Asia
surrounded on the east by the Pacific Ocean,
west by the West Philippine Sea, and south by
the Celebes Sea. The Philippines are an
archipelago of 7,109 islands that cover a total
land area of 299,764 square kilometers. The
Philippines is one of the most natural hazard-
prone countries in the world, it is due to its
location in the "Pacific Ring of Fire” It is
subject to regular earthquakes and volcanic
eruptions. Its great susceptibility to tsunami,
sea level rise, storm surges, landslides,
flood/flashflood/flooding, and drought is due
to its geographical location and physical
environment
The Ring of Fire
is a region around much of the rim of the Pacific
Ocean where many volcanic eruptions and
earthquakes occur. The Ring of Fire is a
horseshoe-shaped belt about 40,000 km long and
up to about 500 km wide. It is the site of around
90 percent of the world's earthquakes and is
home to 75 percent of the world's active and
dormant volcanoes. The Philippines is well
within the Ring of Fire. This is can be seen in the
number of volcanoes in the region as well as the
frequency of earthquakes in the country.

5 of the
Strongest
Earthquake that
02
caused major
destruction in
the Philippines
Bohol Earthquake
(2013)
On October 15,2013, a powerful earthquake
measuring 7.2 magnitude on the Richter Scale
shook the Philippines. It killed more than 150
people, destroyed century-old churches and
affected more than 1 million families in the
Central Visayas.
Mindoro Earthquake(1994)
On November 15,1994, a total of 1530 houses in the
coastal area of Baco and Calapan Oriental Mindoro
were swept away by a tsunami generated by a 7.1
magnitude earthquake. The tragedy also killed 78
people.
Casiguran Earthquake
(1968)
On August 2,1968 , a 7.3 magnitude earthquake killed a total of
270 people and also caused massive landslide and tsunami in
Casiguran Aurora. Almost 300 people were also killed when the
Ruby Tower in Binondo collapsed as a result of the tremor.
Luzon
Earthquake(1990)
On July 16,1990, one of the strongest earthquake to ever strike
the country occurred in several areas of Central Luzon and
Cordillera region. This 7.8 magnitude tremor resulted in a total
of 1,621 death and serious damage in properties.
Moro Gulf
Earthquake(1976)
On August 17,1976, within a 7.9 magnitude and almost 3,000
casualties, this Mindanao earthquake is officially the strongest
and deadliest earthquake in the Philippines history. Almost
40,000 people in the region 9 and 12 were also left homeless
by this tragedy.
03 TSUNAMI
Tsunami in the
Philippines
In a total of 21 tidal waves classified as a tsunami since
1749 a total of 4,868 people died in the Philippines.
Compared to other countries, Tsunamis therefore occur
more often than average, but still moderate.
Most of the devastating tsunamis in the Philippines were
generated from the Philippine trench, Manila trench, East
Luzon trough, and the Cotabato trench. However, closer
examination of historical and recent field data also shows
tsunamigenic earthquake in between the islands in central
Philippines. Thus, since 2001 the Tsunami Hazard
Assessment and Mitigation Program (THAMP) for
Philippines had been initiated to assess and map carefully
the tsunami hazards all over the country.
The marked positions
on the map represent
the most effected
regions within the past
280 years.
Tsunami Threat in the Philippines

The coastal areas in the Philippines especially those facing the Pacific
Ocean, South China Sea, Sulu Sea and Celebes Sea can be affected by
tsunamis that may be generated by local earthquakes. Local tsunamis are
confined to coasts within a hundred kilometers of the source usually
earthquakes and a landslide or a pyroclastic flow. It can reach the shoreline
within 2 to 5 minutes. Far field or distant tsunamis can travel from 1 to 24
hours before reaching the coast of the nearby countries. These tsunamis
mainly coming from the countries bordering Pacific Ocean like Chile,
Alaska in USA and Japan. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC)
and Northwest Pacific Tsunami Advisory Center (NWPTAC) are the
responsible agencies that closely monitor Pacific-wide tsunami event and
send tsunami warning to the countries around the Pacific Ocean.
04 Tsunami
in the Philippines
The 1976 Moro Gulf
tsunami “Midnight
Killer”
The most devastating tsunami in the history of the
Philippines hit the Moro Gulf region and killed around 8,000
people. But it also prompted a change in the country's
disaster preparedness system.

What made the 1976 Moro Gulf Quake most devastating,

however, was not just the degree of the earth shaking.
With its Epicenter near the town of Lebak in Sultan Kudarat,
in a region of the Celebes Sea where earthquakes frequently
occur – the 1976 Moro Gulf quake brought with it one of the
most terrifying natural forces known to man: a tsunami.
● The tsunami affected 700
kilometers of coastline, with
Pagadian City, Cotabato
City, Zamboanga City, and
Lebak in Sultan Kudarat
experiencing the highest
waves.
● About 8,000 people died,
including those missing and
were never found, making
it
the most disastrous tsunami
to hit the Philippines
