WHAT IS
RHYTHM?
Rhythm is like the
heartbeat of music. It's the
pattern of sounds and
silences that repeat in a
song or piece of music.
Time signature
A musical time signature
indicates the number of beats
per measure. It also indicates
how long these beats last.
Beats
Think of beat as the steady pulse
or heartbeat of the music.

Beat is the steady pulse

Rhythm is the pattern of beats and notes

that make up the music.
TEMPO
Tempo is how fast
or slow the beat is.
It's like the speed
of the music.
Meter
Meter is the pattern of
strong and weak beats
that repeats throughout
the music.
SYNCOPATION
Syncopation occurs when
the accents in the rhythm fall
on unexpected beats or
offbeats. It creates a sense of
rhythmic tension and adds
interest to the music.
Accents
Refer to the momentary emphasis on a
particular rhythmic or melodic detail.
An accent mark is a form of music
notation that conveys the style in which
a note should be played.
Polyrhythm
Polyrhythm, the
simultaneous
combination of
contrasting rhythms in a
musical composition.
RHYTHM PATTERN
The Rhythmic Pattern is a
combination of long
sound, short sound, and
rest.
Three Types of
rhythmic pattern
The duple meter (2s) has two beats or
pulses per measure.
The triple meter (3s) has three beats or
pulses per measure.
The quadruple meter (4s) has four
beats or pulses per measure.
