CARE OF THE MOTHER

AND THE NEW BORN


BABY .

STUDENT FROM CHRESO.
OBJECTIVES:

 GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
 At the end of this lecturer ,student nurses must be able to understand and
acquire knowledge.
 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
 At the end of the lecturer student must be able to;
 Explain the steps in caring of the mother.
 State the care of the baby after birth.
 Explain the danger signs in the newborn.
• Explain the steps in caring of the mother.

 OBSERVATIONS;
 During postpartum period ,vitals are a must, check every 15minutes for
2hours, 30minutes for 1hour and then 1hour for every 3hours.
 SLEEP AND REST:
 The woman needs to get enough rest which is important .Rest is essential in
any healing process.
 It helps a woman over come physical emotional stress.
 DIET:
 Eating a well balanced food , rich in protein and vitamins and minerals in order
to have good lactation .note that cosntipation must be avoided by taking plenty
water and food with roughage.
 BREAST CARE:
 The nurse will note the size of the breast , any abnormalities like
sores and cracked nipples .the nurse also palpates for
softness ,warmness or tenderness .
 ABDOMINAL AND FUNDUSS ASSESMENT:
 The abdomen is carefully exposed and any rash or other
abnormality is noted.
 The nurse then palpates the uterus and notes the following:

1. Is the uterus well contracted and hard, or relaxed boggy.
2. Is the uterus tender to touch.
3. Is the uterus bulky.
 GENERAL HYGIEN:
 The woman is then allowed to take a bath after resting with support from the
nurse or care giver.
 Vulva care is emphasized to prevent infection.
 EMOTIONAL SUPPORT:
 The mother should be allowed to take part in her baby's affairs also the mother
need to be recognize


PROMOTION OF MATERNAL-CHILD RELATIONSHIP:
The mother should be allowed to be wit the
baby (rooming)and also encourage
breastfeeding to promote mother to child
bonding.
 STATE THE CARE OF THE BABY:
 In caring of the baby the following are important:
1. Do immediate physical assessment of the newborn baby.
2. Keep the infant warm and dry during the examination.
3. Asses the bladder and bowel function ,and skin color.
4. Care for the umbilical cord (keep dry and clean).
5. Listen to the infants cry ( high, piecing cry can be a sign
of illness.
 7.Heart rate should be between 120-160 beats per
min.(place two fingers on the infants heart or use a
stethoscope).
8.Temperature is usually 36.5-37.2 when taken under
the arm . hypothermia is temperature below 36.5.it is
very important to prevent heat loss after delivery ;dry
and cover the infant especially the head, and
by keeping the infant close to the mother.
9.also check the infants breathing ;it should
be without difficulty. Normal breathing rate
is 30 – 60 breaths per minute.
EXPLAIN THE DANGER SIGNS IN A NEWBORN:

 When the following are noticed please notify the doctor as


soon as possible:
1. poor feeding or sucking.
2. Sleeping all the time.
3. Fever or hypothermia.
4. Blueness of the lips or the skin.
5. Jaundice (yellowish of the skin).
6. No stool by the third day.
