 DESCRIBE INSOLATION AND RADIATION
 THE ROLE OF GREENHOUSE GASES IN THE
HEATING OF THE EARTH
What is insolation?

 Insolation is the amount of the sun's rays that reaches the

earth's surface.

 Therefore, the higher the insolation is, the higher the

temperatures will become.
Some Factors
of Insolation

 Rotation of the earth on its axis

 The angle of incidence of the
sun's rays
 Prevailing winds
 Duration of the day
 Distance between the Sun and
Earth
(Average:150,000,000km)
 Duration of day
 Seasonal Changes

What is
Radiation?
Radiation, flow of atomic
and subatomic particles and
of waves, such as those that
characterize heat rays, light
rays, and X rays.

Relationship Of
Insolation And
Radiation
 Insolation is actually a
form of solar radiation
reaching Earth through
space as electromagnetic
waves.
The role of greenhouse gases in the
heating of the earth.
 Greenhouse gases acts like a barrier around the earth. It consumes the heat that
radiates from the earth and traps it in the earth's atmosphere.

 Some examples of greenhouse gases are:

Carbon dioxide
Methane
Nitrous oxide
Water vapour
ozone
