Introduction
• Definition of ITS
• is the application of sensing, analysis, control and
communications technologies to ground
transportation in order to improve safety, mobility
and efficiency.
• ITS includes a wide range of applications that process
and share information to ease congestion, improve
traffic management, minimize environmental impact
and increase the benefits of transportation to
commercial users and the public in general.
Introduction
• An intelligent transportation system (ITS) is an
advanced application which, without
embodying intelligence as such, aims to
provide innovative services relating to
different modes of transport and traffic
management and enable various users to be
better informed and make safer, more
coordinated, and 'smarter' use of transport
networks.
Introduction
Intelligent transport system can be defined as the
technology applied to transport infrastructure (Road
networks, traffic and transit systems) to:
• Manage traffic and reduce congestion
• Enable users to make informed decisions
• Integrate technologies and expertise to create and
provide innovative services
• Improve safety and mobility
• Increase the efficiency of existing transport
infrastructure
The importance of ITS
• The main focus of the system is to control the
vehicle and to improve safety.
• The purpose of this system is to collect,
establish and distribute information about
traffic and vehicle conditions.
• It results in better control of the vehicle and
enhances the overall operations of transport
networks.
Key Components:
• a. Sensors: Utilized for collecting data on traffic flow,
vehicle speed, road conditions, and environmental factors.
• b. Communication Networks: Enable data exchange
between vehicles, infrastructure, and control centers in
real-time.
• c. Data Analytics: Processing and analysis of collected data
to derive insights for optimizing transportation operations.
• d. Automation: Implementation of automated systems for
vehicle control, traffic management, and incident
detection.
ITS applications
• 1. Advanced traffic management system
 Are developed to improve traffic efficiency
 It provides users with real time information
 It is collected from roadways and traffic utilizing
on board tools, GPS, dynamic central database,
congestion and delay. Example cameras
 It helps to reduce the duration of incidences,
crashes breakdown on highways or any other
roads.
ITS applications
• 2.Advanced Traveller Information system
• Developed in order to inform travellers about traffic
situations.
• It manipulates behaviour to increase safety and
efficiency
• Helps in planning and making a decision
• Compared with individual view, ATIS can improve
maximum efficiency in terms time and cost
• Helps in choice of mode, departure time and travel
route before making plans.
ITS applications
• 3. Advanced Public Transportation system
• Uses transport management and information
technologies to improve efficiency of
operations and increases public transportation
safety.
• So travellers receive updated information such
as the current traffic status, changes in
schedules, incidents on transport systems
used in cities.
ITS applications
• 4. Commercial Vehicles Operations
• Helps improve the fleet operations by predicting supply
and demand of vehicles for services concerning the
current requirement.
• They maintain the management of commercial vehicle
concerning speed, cost and production.
• Incidents connecting to road side operations, safety
assurance, fleet and freight management are monitored
under CVO to support commercial vehicle operations.
• Examples are automatic vehicle identification, electronic
log books, automatic vehicle location and etc.
ITS applications
• 5. Advanced vehicle control systems
• Created to be aware of the road ambience and
increase security by minimizing human mistake.
• Enable drivers to detect and avoid risks and
congestion with warning systems, trip routing,
scheduling, automatic steering and control of
the traffic or collision avoidance.
• They play a portion of driver role in assisting
better choice and activities
conclusion
• In summary, Intelligent Transport Systems
represent a paradigm shift in transportation
management, offering a multitude of
applications to address contemporary
challenges and improve the overall efficiency,
safety, and sustainability of transportation
networks.
