You can use a range of strategies to find a
fraction of a set.

One way is to use division and multiplication.

How to Use Division to Find Fractions
of a Set
Finding ¼ of 24 is the same as 24 items being split into 4 equal
groups.
24 ÷ 4 = 6
Let’s Try Another One
1
5
of 45
45 ÷ 5 = 9
Now It’s Your Turn!

Using the same strategy, find these fractions of a set.

E.g. ¼ of 24 =

We can use this type of equation to solve it:

4 x ? = 24
4 x 6 = 24

We use the denominator in the fraction to know what to multiply by.

Let’s Try an Example

Let’s find 3
of 18

3 x ? = 18
3 x 6 = 18
Try These Yourself
