PPT Presentation Prepared by: Mira Joy C. Alquizar
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson , the students
should be able to:
o-categorizes the graphs of system
of linear equations in two variables
We will need a
RECAP
RECAP

Graph the following linear

equations using the following:
1)2x –y =4

2) 6x -2y = 10 Using slope-

intercept form
In today’s lesson, we will identify
which systems of linear equations
have graphs that are
1. intersecting
2. parallel or
3. coinciding.
INTERSECTING

Using the slope-intercept form

y = mx + b, graph the two linear
equations in one Cartesian plane.
What did you noticed about the two graphs in
the Cartesian plane?
The graphs of linear equations have exactly
one solution. It is the point of intersection
of the two lines, and the only point that lies
on both lines. Its coordinates satisfy both
equations. The system that has one solution
is called consistent independent.
What did you noticed about their
slope?

The lines have different slopes

and different y-intercepts.
EXAMPLE 2
The graphs of linear equations have a
common point. It means that they have
exactly one solution. It is the point of
intersection of the two lines, and the only
point that lies on both lines. The system is
consistent independent. The lines have
different slopes but they have the same y-
intercepts.
2. PARALLEL
What did you noticed about their
slope? About their y-intercepts?

The system has no solution. There

are no points in common. This
system is called inconsistent.
What can you say about the graphs of
this linear equations?

Both lines have the same slopes but

different y – intercepts.
3. COINCIDING
As you can see, the table of values are the
same with the first equation.

Does it mean they have the same line? Let

us see the graph.
The two lines coincide because the graph
of each linear equation is on the same
line therefore we can say that it has
infinite number of solutions. Every
ordered pair that satisfies both equations
is a solution. This system is called
consistent and dependent.
Both lines have the same slopes
and same y – intercepts.
Direction: For each system of linear equations (a)
change both equations to slope intercept form; (b)
determine the number of solution/s that it have.
Direction: Classify the system of linear equations
as consistent dependent, consistent independent,
or inconsistent.
WRAP-UP

The system is consistent independent if the graphs

intersect at exactly one point. The system has one
solution. The slopes of the lines are different but
they can have same or different y – intercepts.
The system is inconsistent if the
graphs are parallel. The graphs have
no point in common. The system has
no solution. The slopes of the lines
are the same but their y – intercepts
are different.
The system is consistent
dependent if the graphs coincide.
The system has infinitely many
solutions. The slopes of the lines
and the
y – intercepts are the same.
