Question: First Aid to a victim with electical shock
ELECTRIC SHOCK An Electric shock occurs when someone comes in contact with electrical energy OR Is a physiological reaction caused by electric current passed through human body How can you get electric shock • By poor insulated wires • By underground electrical equipment • Using electrical equipment that is in contact with water • Being stack by lightning Special note • AC can freez patient hand to current source while DC can throw patient causing injuries • Although skin burns saverity does not predict the the degree of internal damage, it is more severe if the skin has low resistance • Refer patients with significant electrical burns to a significant internal damage is suspected, begin fluid resuscitation What happens when you get an electric shock • An electric shock can have no injury at all • Burns which are more common • Cardiac arrest which has more effect on heart • Muscle, Nerve and distraction from passing through the body • Death Symptoms and Signs • Change in alertness (consciousness) • Broken bones • Heart attack, chest, jaw, arm neck • Head ache • Problem with swallowing, vision and hearing • Irregular heart beat • Muscle spam fail • Skin burns What to do the time of electric shock • Disconnect the power supply don't even touch the victim until you are sure that the power supply is off • Be careful in wet areas such as bathroom as water conducts electricity • If current doesn't turn off use a non conducting object such as broom, chair or rug to push the victim out from electric sources • Do not use wet or metal objects if possible stand on something dry that doesn't conduct electricity What to do the time of electric shock • Don't touch the victim with your bare hands if he or she is still in contact with current sources • Don't apply ice, butter, or ointment , fluffy cotton dressing or adhesive bandages • Dont remove dead skin or break, burst blisters if the person has been burned First Aid • Check for persons response and breathing. It may be necessary to start cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR • Talk calmly and reassuring to the person • Be calm and do not panic • Dont forget to call ambulance in the meantime First Aid Treatment • Examine Patient completely, including for treatment injuries • Resuscitation • Wound care
