Introduction

• Welcome to our presentation on generating

electricity from saltwater using a copper vessel
and iron nails.

• This simple experiment serves as an engaging

way to explore the principles of electrochemistry.

• We will show you how to conduct this experiment

and discuss its educational significance.
Alternative Fuels
• Alternative fuels, also known as non-conventional and
advanced fuels, are fuels derived from sources other
than petroleum.

• Alternative fuels may be used in a dedicated system that

burns a single fuel, or in a mixed system with other fuels
including traditional gasoline or diesel, such as in hybrid-
electric or flexible fuel vehicles.

• Most alternative fuels are produced domestically, reducing

our dependence on imported oil.

Hydrogen Bio Diesel Ethanol LNG Compressed Air
Objectives
• The objective of this experiment is to
demonstrate and understand the generation of
electricity through electrochemical reactions.

• By the end of this presentation, you'll gain

insights into the basics of electrochemistry and
its practical applications.
Theory of electrochemistry

• Electrochemistry involves the exchange of electrons

through chemical reactions.

• In our experiment, a simple electrochemical reaction

takes place within the saltwater solution.

• This reaction results in the generation of electricity,

which we'll explore in more detail.
Case study: Electricity from saltwater
Materials needed:
1.Copper pot
2.Iron nail
3.Saltwater solution (water + sodium chloride)
4.Two copper wires
5.Four crocodile pin
6.Small electric fan
7.Safety goggles (for safety during the experiment)

Preparing the electrodes

• The first step is to prepare the electrodes. Start by

cleaning the copper electrode to ensure a smooth
surface.

• Additionally, select appropriate iron nails for the

experiment, which will serve as the other electrode.
Experiment Setup
 Step 1: Fill the copper pot with the saltwater solution.

 Step 2: Insert the iron nail and a copper wire into the
saltwater without touching each other.

 Step3: Connect one end of the copper wire to the positive

terminal (anode) and the other end to the negative terminal
(cathode) of a low-voltage DC power supply.

 Step 4: Place the fan nearby and switch on the power

supply.
Science Behind Saltwater Electricity

Salt Dissociation: Sodium chloride in water dissociates

into sodium ions (Na+) and chloride ions (Cl-).

The movement (flow) of electron is electricity . So due

to the movement of chloride ion the electricity is
produced in this case.
Output/result
Application
Electrochemical reactions like the one demonstrated here
have real-world applications. They can be used for:

• Desalination of seawater

• Environmental monitoring

• Educational demonstrations in science and chemistry

Limitations

It's important to highlight the limitations of this method

for practical electricity generation. While it's an
intriguing experiment, it has limitations, such as:

• Low voltage output

• Unsuitability for significant energy production

Further improvements

• Further we will create an electric cycle which primarily runs

on electricity produced from salt water.

• This cycle can also run on the electricity produced by

pedalling.

• Electricity is produced by pedalling by the property of static

electricity.
Thank You!
