Internal Combustion Engines (IC engines) are a class of engines that generate mechanical power by burning a

fuel-air mixture within a confined space called a combustion chamber. These are widely used in various
applications, including automobiles, motorcycles, aircraft,ships, and power generation.

There is escalating demand for cleaner and more energy-efficient transportation alternatives due to the

environmental impacts by ICEs and exhaustion of the resources available.

Introduction
4

 Electric Vehicles have emerged as a good solution to reduce the environmental impact of the
traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. The design and optimization of electric vehicle
involve interactions between diverse components, including the battery, electric motor, power
electronics, and the overall vehicle dynamics.

Scope of Project

 In the field of simulation, the future scope of electric vehicles involves sophisticated virtual
testing and modeling. This includes simulating various aspects such as battery performance, energy
management systems, and vehicle dynamics.

 Advanced simulations can aid in optimizing EV designs, predicting real-world performance, and
developing control algorithms.
Calulation of BLDC Motor

 To calculate power of BLDC motor for an electric vehicle

To design an electric motorcycle with a gross weight of 500kg and a top speed of 35 km/hr.
Every vehicle should overcome these 3 resistance forces.
Rolling Resistance
Gradient Resistance
Aerodynamic Resistance
F rolling = Cr.m.a
=(0.02*500*9.81) = 98.1 N
Cr-Coefficient of rolling resistance
m - Mass of the vehicle (in kilogram)
a - Acceleration due to gravity (m/s²)
Taking, Cr=0.02(for car on normal road)
m=500~kg
a=9.81~m/s^2

10

 F_gradient=m.a.sin(theta)
Fgradient=0~N
Considering the flat surface,
 m - Mass of the vehicle (in kilogram)
 a - Acceleration due to gravity (m/s^{2})
 theta- Slope or Gradient angle
Taking,
m=500~kg
a=9.81m/s^2
theta = 0° (for flat surface)

F aerodynamic = 0.5(p.V².CA.Af)
p - Density of air medium (kg/m³)
V - Velocity of vehicle (m/s)
CA- Coefficient of air resistance
Af - Frontal area of vehicle (m²)
11

Taking ,p = 1.23 kg/m³ (air at sea level)

V = 35 km/hr = 9.72 m/s
CA= 0.4 (for cars)
Af= Frontal area of vehicle(for cars 0.41m^2)

F aerodynamic drag = 0.5(p.V².CA.Af) = 0.5(1.23 x 9.72^2 x 0.4 x 0.41)

F aerodynamic drag = 9.52N
The total resistance force,
F total = F rolling + F gradient + F Aerodynamic drag
F total =107.62N.
The motorcycle has to overcome this 107.62 N resistance force to get propelled.
Propelling power required to overcome this resistance force:
Power = Total resistance force x Velocity of vehicle (in m/s) = 107.62 x 9.72
Power = 1046.06 Watts = 1 kilowatt.
TO RUN AN ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE WITH A GROSS WEIGHT OF 500KG AND A TOP SPEED OF
35 KM/HR, WE NEED 1 KILO WATT MOTOR.

14

 TO CALCULATE RANGE OF LITHIUM ION BATTERY (AMPERE HOUR) FOR AN ELECTRIC

VEHICLE
To run an electric bike with 48V 1000 Watts BLDC motor, how much ampere hour of lithium ion battery is
needed.Step:1 Find out the current (in amps) consumed by the motor to run.
We know that,
Power =Voltage X Current
1000=48 X Current
Current = (1000/48)=20.83 Amps
Step:2 Find out the Watt hour of the battery.
To run the 1000 Watts motor for 1 hour, Simply multiply (1000 Watts X 1 hour) = 1000 Watt hour.
Take efficiency of 80% for battery.
i.e(1000/0.8)=1250 Watt hour
Step:3 Convert Watt hour of battery into Ampere hour of battery
W.K.T , Power Voltage X Current
Also Watt hour = Voltage X Ampere hour
1250/48 Ampere hour = 26.04 Ampere hour (say 30 AH)
15

 Therefore, to run the 1000 Watts motor for 1 hour, 48V 30 AH lithium ion battery is needed.

If the electric bike is running at an average speed of 35 km/hr, 48V 30 AH provides 35 km mileage.

 If you want 35 km mileage (range), 48 V 30 AH lithium ion battery is needed.

 If you want 70 km mileage (range), 48 V 60 AH lithium ion battery is needed.

 If you want 105 km mileage (range), 48 V 90 AH lithium ion battery is needed.

 Modeling an Electric Vehicle (EV) using MATLAB and Simulink is expected to yield a
comprehensive and dynamic simulation.

 Through this process, we can analyze and optimize the performance of the vehicle under various
conditions, gaining insights into factors such as acceleration, range, and energy efficiency.

 Simulink facilitates the modeling of essential components like the electric motor, battery, and
power electronics, enabling the evaluation of different control strategies for the powertrain.

 The simulation also allows for the design and testing of a Battery Management System (BMS),
ensuring efficient monitoring and control of the battery’s state.
