Task 2:
You will choose from the selection of provided advertising briefs
and produce a body of work as specified by the requirements of
the brief. You will be required to work with any provided assets
and brand guidelines in order to create a professional body of
work. This may include a variety of outcomes such as motion
elements, asset packs, imagery for a variety of formats (screen,
print, large format) and will challenge you to think creatively you
create a viable advertising campaign.

Taught sessions / Facilitated Learning / Independent study

Session 1 - Introduction to Advertising Illustration:


Seminar to recap necessary module requirements and to explore illustration for
advertising followed by group discussion to analyse case studies.
Task – Idea generation for initial research into relevant brands/campaigns within
advertising

Session 2 - Campaign choices review


Tutor-led small group critiques to review choices for advertising briefs. Feedback
to assess if choices reflect illustrative voice.
Task – Research relevant advertising campaigns

Advertising so it’s worth revisiting your Editorial research
and investigating if any of your artists have done work for
any campaigns.

Another in the ongoing poster series for The
Local's SHHH Quiet Music Festival. This time
around it features worried jungle animals
hiding from pesky hunters. Don't make a
sound guys and it will all be fine!
The next poster for SHHH London 2013 will
form the right hand side of this diptych and
complete the picture.

Studio Bread Collective designed the
identity from 2017, and chose to
commission the Association of Illustrators’
(AOI) illustrator of the year, Aart-Jan
Venema for the 2017 visuals.

“Every year I just love the illustrators they pick,” says Aart. “I was
honoured when they reached out to me. I didn’t expect to be able to tick a
festival off my bucket list already.”

The illustrator was commissioned after the festival saw his work at last years Pick Me
Up festival. “The loose, overarching theme is discovery, which fits my work pretty well,”
he explains. “I had lots of freedom to merge my world with that of Green Man, the
images are full of little stories and discoveries for the viewer.”

2018
Sunniva Krogseth, Olso – Norway, has drawn 10
different scenes, which will be used to indicate 10 areas
of the festival. Bright, contrasting colours have been
used for each one, which fit in with Bread Collective’s
overall identity for the festival. The areas include
Einstein’s Garden, where visitors can partake in science
experiments, to Fortune Falls, a hidden-away section by
a river that will host art installations and aims to be a
place of tranquility.

“All of the scenes tell stories about what’s happening in those different
spaces,” she says. “It’s a sort-of map, though obviously not accurate.
Creating settings like these is something you would typically do for kids,
so it was really fun to make a playful world for adults.”

To create her illustrations, Krogseth hand-painted using brush-ink, then


digitally edited and enhanced them. She says the drawings are “like a
puzzle”, putting together “different parts” to create various stories.

for a gig poster! They
wanted to keep in the
theme of intertwined
animals so I went with a
Borzoi and a Raven. This is
certainly one of my

For 2019 Emerald City Comic Con
had me design their poster. It’s one
of my favorite shows, the fact that I
live close to it doesn’t even matter.
I was happy to create a Seattle
cityscape that wan’t just another
skyline with the Space Needle at
the center. Instead, I wanted to
show the downtown Seattle that I
interact with almost every day.

I got approached to do a tour


poster for Neko Case and
immediately jumped on it. It was
an incredibly fun job and she let
me have pretty free reign of the
imagery. It was also made into a t-
shirt that I’ve gotten to see in the
wild!

Researching illustration in advertising


- This can be more challenging than researching other genres e.g.
editorial illustration, children’s book illustration etc

- Setting a working schedule for yourself


- hold yourself accountable to make the work you need to on time and
produce something you are genuinely proud of making.
