g2. Development
ANIMALS
o Animals are multicellular eukaryotes whose
cells are bound together by collagen.
PLANTS
o (Plantae) are multicellular eukaryotic mostly
photosynthetic organisms typically lacking
locomotive movement or obvious nervous or sensory
organs and possessing cellulose cell walls.
• The zygote undergoes a series of cell
divisions called cleavage.
• Cleavage leads to the formation of a blastula,
a hollow ball of cells.
• Further development leads to the formation
of a gastrula, with distinct germ layers.
How growth happens Mainly by cell enlargement Increasing the number of cells
( increase in cell size)
Where cell division happens Mainly at meristems – found at the In most tissues
tips of shoots and roots or leaves.
Cell differentiation Many cells can differentiate Most cells lose the ability to
differentiate at an early stage.
summary
Growth in plants is affected by light
and phytohormones, while growth in animals is
affected by nutrients.
