One of the most important things


to master is on how the player
handles the right grip.

Table tennis is a racket sport, the
players’ main weapon of defense is
in their hands and that is the
paddle or racket

The purpose of the grip is to


control the angle of the
racket.
WHY
?
With the correct angle of the racket it can control
the:
1. Ball height 4. The spin of the ball
2. Speed of the ball 5. The ball amount of spin
3. Ball direction
The Shakehand Grip
It is most widely known
in the Western world,
perhaps the reason why
it is also known as the
‘’western grip’’. This also
is the players’ favorite
grip because it is said to
be the most versatile
and popular type.

The Penhold Grip
The second kind of grip
used in the world of table
tennis. This kind of grip has
3 varieties namely;
a. Traditional grip
b. Japanese or Korean grip
c. the reverse penhold
backhand grip
The Penhold Grip
Basic Racket Angles
•Proper racket angels are very
important in certain shots. There are
three varieties of racket angels that
the player / student can choose
from. These are the neutral angle,
closed angle and the open angle
NEUTRAL
• The racket is in
vertical position.
• It is the ‘’ready’’
position
• Used when the player
is waiting for a serve.
• Easily moved from
forehand to backhand
CLOSED
• The close angle is to
hold the face of the
racket facing low
toward the ground.
• Used for a top spin
• Used to block an
attack or block stroke.
OPEN
• The face of the
racket is facing
forward or facing
up.
• It is used in push
stroke.
• It is used in back
spin play.

which stands for International Table
Tennis Federation.
• Western Grip—It is the other term
used for shakehand grip and was
popularized in western countries.
• Asian Grip—Other term for penhold
grip and has three versions that came
from Asian countries like China, Korea
and Japan.
