LIFE AND WORKS

OF RIZAL
THE SURNAME RIZAL

1. The real of surname of Rizal family is


MERCADO.
2. Mercado was adopted in 1731 by Domingo
Lameo (paternal great-great grandfather of Dr.
Jose Rizal)
3. Rizal’s family acquired a second surnamed
RIZAL which was given by a Spanish Alcalde
Mayor (provincial governor) of Laguna who was
a family friend.
4. Dr. Jose Rizal write this on “Letter to Blumentritt”
without a date and place.
RIZAL FAMILY IS A GOOD AND MIDDLE
CLASS FAMILY

1. The house of Rizal was two-storey, rectangular in


shape and made of adobe stones and hard wood.
2. They belong to PRINCIPALIA (town aristocracy in
Spanish Philippines).
3. His parents are engaged on farming and stock
raising.
4. They raised pigs, chicken and turkeys at the
backyard.
5. They harvested rice, corn, and sugarcane.
6. Doǹa Teodora managed a general goods store and
operated a small flour-mill and a home-made ham
press.
Evidence of Rizal’s Influence
of Being Ilustrados
1. Rizal’s parents were able to build a large stone house which
was situated near the town church and to buy another one.
2. They owned carriage which symbolized an ilustrados during
Spanish Period/Era.
3. They have private library (the largest in Calamba) which
consisted of more than 1,000 volumes.
4. They participated prominently in all social and religious
affairs in the community.
5. They were gracious hosts to all visitors and guests (friars,
Spanish officials, and Filipino friends) during the town fiestas
and other holidays.
6. Beneath their roof, all guests irrespective of their color, rank,
social position and economic status were welcome.
HOME LIFE OF RIZAL

1. The Rizal family had a simple, contented, and happy life.


2. In consonance with Filipino custom, family ties among the
Rizal’s family were intimately close.
3. Don Francisco and Doǹa Teodora loved their children, but they
never spoiled them.
4. They were strict parents and they trained their children of the
following:
a. To loved God
b. To behave well
c. To be obedient
d. To respect people, especially the old folks

 Parents of Dr. Jose Rizal believed that:


“Spare the rod and spoil the child”
5. Everyday Rizal’s (parents and children) heard mass
in the town church, particularly during Sundays and
Christian holidays.

6. They prayed together daily at home (The Angelus at


the sunset and The Rosary) before retiring to bed at
night.

7. After the family prayers, all the children kissed the


hands of their parents.

8. Life was not, however, all prayers and church


services for Rizal’s children. They were also given
ample time and freedom to play by their strict and
religious parents.
THE YOUNG JOSE RIZAL

 He was a frail, sickly, undersized child.


 At the age of 3, he participated in family prayers.
 At the age of 5, he was able to read the Spanish family bible.

 At a young age, Jose had shown some of his artistic talents:


1. At age of 5, he began to make sketches.
2. At the age of 8,
 he wrote the first poem in his native language, “Sa Aking
Mga Kababata or To My Fellow Children”
 He wrote his first dramatic work which was a “Tagalog
Comedy”
 Jose Rizal was good in sleigh of hands. He learned so many
magic tricks, such as making coin paper disappeared in his
hands, making handkerchief disappeared in thin air.
 He entertain the town folks with magic lantern exhibitions.
 He gained skills in manipulating marionettes (puppet shows)
The happiest period of Rizal life was spent in Lakeshore town
of Calamba.

 Dr. Jose Rizal loved Calamba, Laguna with all his heart and
soul.

 In 1876, when he was 15 years old and was a student of


Ateneo de Manila, he remembered his hometown.

 He wrote “Un Recuerdo a mi Pueblo” or “In Memory of my


Town”

 Aside from his sketching and sculpturing talent, Rizal


possessed a God-given gift for literature. His mother noticed
poetic inclinition and encouraged him to write poetry.

 In 1872, her mother was imprison because of


trumped-up charges of food poisoning of her
brother’s wife.
 In 1891, she was made to walk 50 kms to Sta.
Cruz, Laguna, for failing to use hispanicized
surname, Realonda de Rizal.

IN TERMS OF HERIDITARY INFLUENCE
According to Biological science, there are inherent qualities which a
person inherits from his ancestors and parents.

From his MALAYAN ANCESTORS


 Rizal evidently inherited his love for freedom, his innate desire to travel,
and his dominant courage.

From his CHINESE ANCESTORS


 He inherit his serious nature, frugality, patience, and love for children.

From his SPANISH ANCESTORS


 He got his elegance of bearing , sensitivity to insult and gallantry to ladies.

From his FATHER


 He inherited a profound sense of self-respect, the love for work and habit
of independent thinking.

From her MOTHER


 He inherited his religious nature, the spirit of self-sacrifice and the
passion for arts and literature.
IN TERMS OF ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCE

According to Psychologists, environment, as well as heredity,


affects the nature of a person.

Environmental Influence includes:

2. Associates
3. Events

 The scenic beauties of Calamba and the beautiful garden Rizal family
stimulated the inborn artistic and literary talents of Jose Rizal.

 The religious atmosphere at his home fortified his religious nature.

 His brother Paciano, instilled his mind the love for freedom and justice.

 His sisters, he learned to be courteous and kind to women.

 His Aya (Yaya), the fairytales told by his Aya during his early childhood
awakened his interest to folklore and legends.
THE 3 UNCLES (brothers of his mother) exerted a good influence to Jose
Rizal:

 Inspired him to develop artistic ability

From Tio Manuel (athletic)


 Encouraged him to develop his frail body by means of physical exercises
like horseriding, walking and wrestling.

From Tio Gregorio (booklover)


 Intensified his voracious reading of good books.

From Father Leoncio Lopez


 Fostered Rizal’s love for scholarship and intellectual honesty.

From the sorrows in his family like death of Concha in 1865 and
imprisonment of his mother in 1871-1874
 Contributed to strengthen his character, enabling him to resist blows of
adversity in later years.
From the Spanish abuses and cruelties which he witnessed
during his childhood/boyhood, such as the following:
1. Brutal acts of the liutenant of the Guardia Civil and the
Alcalde.
2. The unjust tortures inflicted on innocent Filipinos.
3. The execution of Father Gomez, Father Burgos, and Father
Zamora in 1872.
 This awakened his spirit of patriotism and inspired him to
consecrate his life and talents to redeem his oppress people.

In terms of Aid of Providence


Greater than heredity and environment in the fate of man is
the aid of Divine Providence.
 Any person may have everything in life (brains, wealth, and
power) but without the Aid of Divine Providence, he cannot
attain greatness in the annals of the nation.
 Rizal was providentially destined to be the pride and glory of
his nation.
God had endowed or given Dr. Jose Rizal:
1. Versatile gifts of a genius
2. Vibrant spirit of a nationalists
3. Valiant heart to sacrifice for a noble cause

JOSE RIZAL EDUCATION


 The first teacher of Rizal was her MOTHER (Doǹa Teodora
Alonso Realonda)
 taught him ABCs
 stimulated her son’s imagination by telling many stories
 encourage to write poems

Rizal’s parents hired private tutors to Dr. Jose Rizal namely:


1st Tutor - Maestro Celestino
2nd Tutor - Maestro Lucas Padua
3rd Tutor - Maestro Leon Monroy (teach Spanish and Latin)
THE SCHOOL OF MAESTRO JUSTIANO
AQUINO CRUZ

Jose Rizal was sent to Biǹan to study in this school.


Tio Manuel had taught Jose Rizal the art of
wrestling.
Jose Rizal became a member of macho bravado
kids.
He spent his leisure time/hours at the painter’s
studio of Juancho.
He ended up his studies in Biǹan on Dec. 17, 1870
after one year and a half schooling.
In academic studies, Jose Rizal beats all Biǹan boys.
He surpass them all in Spanish, Latin and other
subjects.
RIZAL’S ANCESTRY
As a typical Filipino, Jose Rizal was the
product of the mixture of races. In his
veins flowed the blood of both East and
West namely:
1. Negrito
2. Indonesian
3. Malay
4. Chinese
5. Japanese
6. Spanish
