Why did Japan start invading China?
By 1931 there were many Japanese businesses in Manchuria
where the railways had been built
and were run by the Japanese. An explosion damaging part of
railway gave the Japanese
government an excuse to invade Manchuria and take it from
China as it was already seeking raw
material to fuel its growing industries. There was no match
between the two armies and the
Chinese government complained the League of Nation which
disapproved of the
Japanese attack but had no means of forcing a Japanese retreat.
Japanese since simply left the
league and kept Manchuria. 2
 Invasion of China
Japanese invaded Northern China in 1937,
and, by 1941, had conquered a broadband
of the
land across the northern coast as well as
the main Southern ports and many great
cities.
Japanese soldiers killed many people
including women and children. During
World War II, the Japanese government
claimed that they were fighting to free
Asia from the rule of the hated
Europeans.
In Fact, they were in many ways as bad as or worse than the
Europeans: they had
come not to free but to conquer, and treated other Asians, particularly
Chinese with great
brutality 3

America strongly criticized Japan's
attack on China. Japan and the USA
were business rivals in Asia, and
Japan needed American oil and iron
for its factories.
When, in 1940, the American
government decided to block all
supplies to Japan unless it withdrew
from China, the Japanese military
decided on a war:

a swift attack on the US fleet as its base in pearl

Harbour in Hawaii to persuade the Americans to let
the Japanese have their way. This must be one of the
biggest mistakes in the history. 4

Though the Japanese had won

spectacular victories in 1942 but could
not face the combined
strength of the USA and British empire
which were very strong.
American planes started
bombing there cities, Tokyo was
almost turned into ashes and
automatic bomb wiped out
Hiroshima .At last Japanese had to
surrender.
