SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY
TOPIC : ATOMIC STRUCTURE AND THE PERIODIC TABLE.

HANNINGTON CHERUIYOT KIRUI

EDS/M/0051/2021
OBJECTIVES

 By the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to;

1. Define Atomic structure
2. Describe the three subatomic particles in an atom
Atomic Structure

 The atomic structure is the smallest particle of an element that take

part in a chemical reaction. The atom is made up of subatomic
particles;
1. Protons
2. Neutrons
3. Electrons

Diagram showing relative positions of protons, electrons and neutrons in an

atom of an element .
1. Protons

 The protons are positively charged

 Is found in the center of an atom called nucleus
 It has a relative mass of 1
 The number of protons in an atom is its Atomic number
2. Neutrons

 The neutron is neither positively 0r negatively charged thus neutral

 Like protons it is found in the center of an atom, the nucleus.
 The number of protons and neutrons in an atom of an element give its Mass number
3. Electrons

 The electrons is negatively charged

 Is found in fixed regions surrounding the center of an atom called energy level or orbitals.
 The number of electrons and protons in an atom of an element is always equal.
 It has a relative mass 1/1840
Assignment

1. Discuss the atomic structure.
