GRINDING MACHINES

Grinding

• Grinding is a surface finishing operation where very thin layer

of material is removed in the form of dust particles.
• Thickness of material removed is in range of 0.25 to 0.50 mm.
• Tool used is a abrasive wheel.
Grinding machines

• Grinding machine is a power operated machine tool where,

the work piece is fed against constantly rotating abrasive
wheel to remove thin layer of material from work.

 Principle of grinding machines

• Work piece is fed against the rotating abrasive wheel.

• Due to action of rubbing or friction between the abrasive
particles and work piece material is removed
 Types of Grinding Machine

• Rough Grinders
1. Floor stand and Bench grinders
2. Flexible shaft grinders
3. Swing frame grinders
4. Abrasive belt grinders

• Precision Grinders
1. Cylindrical grinders
2. Internal grinders
3. Surface grinders
4. Toll and cutter grinders
 Grinding machine operations

• The process of grinding is the operation of removing excess

material from metal parts by a grinding wheel made of hard
abrasives.
• The following operations are generally performed in a
grinding machine.

1. Cylindrical grinding
2. Taper grinding
3. Gear grinding
4. Thread grinding
1. Cylindrical grinding :

• Cylindrical grinding is performed by mounting and rotating the

work between centres in a cylindrical grinding machine.
• The work is fed longitudinally against the rotating grinding wheel to
perform grinding. The upper table of the grinding machine is set at
0° during the operation.

2. Taper grinding :
• Taper grinding on long work pieces can be done by swivelling the
upper table. If the work piece is short, the wheel head may be
swivelled to the taper angle.
• Another method of grinding external taper is to true the face of the
grinding wheel by a diamond tool dresser to the required angle.
• In this case, the table and the wheel head are not swivelled.
3. Gear grinding :
• The teeth of gears are ground accurately on gear grinding
machines for their shape.
• Gear grinding is done by the generating process or by using a
form grinding wheel.
• The generating process makes use of two saucer shaped
grinding wheels.
• These wheels are used to grind two faces of successive teeth.

4. Thread grinding :
• Thread grinding machines are used to grind threads accurately.
• The grinding wheel itself is shaped to the thread profile.
• These formed grinding wheels have one or multi threads on
them.
 FLEXIBLE SHAFT GRINDER :

o Parts of Flexible shaft grinder :

• Motor
• Flexible shaft
• Handpiece or Handle
• Grinding Head
• Speed control mechanism
• Protective Casing
• Mounting Bracket or Stand
 CONSTRUCTION OF FLEXIBLE SHAFT GRINDERS

• Flexible Shaft Grinder is a combination of a Flexible Shaft

consisting of a rotating wire rope or coil (known as Inner core)
which is flexible but has some torsion stiffness, and an Induction
Electric High Speed Motor mounted on a swivelling stand.
• Flexible shaft is constructed with a number of superimposed,
tightly wound, helical coils spring wrapped around a centre wire
due to which it can be bent, without fracture, to a much smaller
radius than a solid shaft of the same outside diameter.
• When the motor is switched on considerable power is
transmitted with negligible friction to the end of the flexible
shaft where a grinding, cutting or buffing wheel is attached.
• The biggest benefit of Flexible shaft grinder is its possibility to
operate in restricted areas at constant speed .
• Thus Flexible shaft grinding is the most appropriate method to
grind or polish heavy unmovable or heavy to handle jobs
there by giving freedom to the operator to grind the job
without handling it.
• Flexible Shaft Grinders manufactured at Amber are
continuous duty rating, easy to operate, robust constructed,
vibration free and low maintenance as a result of which high
productivity is achieved at lowest consumption of power.
 ADVANTAGES :
• Design Simple
• Easy to oprate
• Accurate Results
• Can be used to grind a wide range of material
• Machine is automatic
• Constant speed

 DISADVANTAGES :
• High Energy consumer
• Produce lot of Noise
