The 5 Senses
Why the body responds to Stimuli: Receptors are groups of cells that detect a change in the environment -
stimulus. In the nervous system this leads to an electrical impulse being made that is transmitted to the brain in
response to the stimulus. The brain then interprets the different signals as either positive or negative, good or
dangerous for the person or animal. The 5 senses are important for people and animals to guide them safely in
their specific environments. Sensory organs contain groups of receptors that respond to specific Stimuli. The 5
senses are:

1. Sight - The eye

2. Hearing - The Inner Ear
3. Touch - The Skin
4. Smell - The Nose and Olfactory
5. Taste - The Tongue and Taste Buds
The 5 Senses
Stimulus and Stimuli
Definition of Stimulus: A thing or event that evokes a specific functional reaction in an organ or tissue.

Definition of Stimuli: Something that stirs or urgs the action in body when the environment changes.
Stimuli
The Eye - Sight
Sight: Dave saw a spectacularly colorful bird last Spring. Dave avoided a dangerous hole in the ground.
The Eye - Sight
The Inner Ear - Hearing
Sounds: Milly heard a clash of drums. Milly covered her head when she heard a loud boom from above.
The Inner Ear - Hearing
The Skin - Touch
Irritants: Sally one summer stayed out in the sun to long and her skin became sunburned.

Temperature changes: Joe went out to the back yard but went inside because it was to cold outside.
The Skin - Touch
The Nose and Olfactory - Smell
Smells: At the kitchen david smelled a turkey cooking. David smelled smoke and called the Fire Department
because of a fire.
The Nose and Olfactory - Smell
The Tongue and Taste Buds - Taste
Taste: Jack got to taste the delicious sausage they got at the store. Jack threw out an orange that tasted bad
because it was expired.
The Tongue and Taste Buds - Taste
The Tongue and Taste Buds - Taste
What are Sensory organs?
Sensory organs are organs that responds to external stimuli. The eyes get the sight Stimuli, the ears get the sound
Stimuli, the nose gets the smell Stimuli, the tongue gets taste Stimuli, and the Skin gets the touch Stimuli.
Transmitting information in the body
The information from the Stimuli is transmitted to the brain by the Sensory neurons.
What happens next?
The two reactions that can happen are:

First the brain might tell the body to move

Second the brain might tell the body to relax
