BASIC CONCEPT OF

DISASTER AND
DISASTER RISK
MISSANJ’S CLASS
LEARNING
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

1 2 3

Understand the Justify different Appreciate the

meaning of kinds of disasters significant of
disaster that are common knowing disaster
risks
DISASTER
Disaster is a sudden, calamitous
occurence that causes
• great harm, injury,
destruction and devastation
to life and property
• physical and emotional
distress
DISASTER
Disaster are often a result of the
combination of:
• exposure to a hazard;
2. the conditions of
vulnerability that are present
3. insufficient capacity or
measures to reduce or cope with
the potential negative
consequences.
IMPACTS
• loss of life
• disease and other negative
effects on human physical,
mental and social well
being
• damage to properties
• destruction of assets
• loss of services
• social and economic
disruptions
CLASSIFICATION OF
DISASTERS
CLASSIFICATION OF
DISASTERS
(2 LARGE CATEGORIES)
NATURAL
DISASTERS
a natural phenomenon caused
by natural forces,
examples:
earthquakes
typhoons
volcanic eruptions
hurricanes
fires
tornadoes
NATURAL
theyDISASTERS
can be classified as rapid
onset disasters and those with
progressive onset
(drought that lead to famine)
These events can have
tremendous effects.
MAN-MADE
DISASTERS
Disasters caused by man are
those in which major direct
causes are identifiable
intentional or non-intentional
human actions.
CLASSIFICATION OF
DISASTERS
(3 SUBDIVISIONS)
TECHNOLOGICAL/
INDUSTRIAL
Unregulated industrialization
DISASTERS
and inadequate safety standards
increase the risk for industrial
disasters.
TECHNOLOGICAL/
INDUSTRIAL
Examples:
DISASTERS
leaks of hazardous materials
accidental explosions
bridge or road collapses
vehicle collisions
power cuts
TERRORISM/
VIOLENCE
The threat of terrorism has also
increased due to the spread of
technologies involving nuclear,
biological, and chemical agents
used to develop weapons of
mass destruction.
TERRORISM/
VIOLENCE
Examples:
bombs or explosions,
release of chemical materials,
release of biological agents,
release of radioactive agents,
multiple or massive shootings
mutinies
COMPLEX
HUMANITARIAN
EMERGENCIES
this is a result of international or
civil war. In such situations,
large numbers of people are
displaced from their homes due
to a lack of personal safety and
the disruption of basic
infrastructure
COMPLEX
HUMANITARIAN
EMERGENCIES
including food distribution,
water, electricity, and sanitation
or;
communities are left stranded
and isolated in their own homes
unable to access assistance.
COMPLEX
HUMANITARIAN
EMERGENCIES
examples:
conflicts or wars
Genocide
The damage caused by disaster
cannot be measured. It also
differs with the kind of
geographical location, climate,
earth’s specific characteristics
and level of vulnerability.
VOLCANIC
ERUPTION
Volcanic eruptions occur when
magma, a mixture of molten
rock and gas, builds up pressure
underground. This can result in
devastating natural disasters
such as tsunamis, floods, and
earthquakes.
TYPHOON
A typhoon is a name for a
cyclone. It is a massive storm
that originates in the warm,
tropical waters of the world's
oceans. Typhoons are
predominantly found in the
western and northern regions of
the Pacific Ocean.
RISK
-the combination of the
probability of an event and its
negative consequences
-it is associated with the degree
to which humans cannot cope
(lack of capacity)with a
situation
DISASTER RISK
refers to the potential (not actual
and realized) disaster losses, in
lives, health status, livelihoods,
assets, and services which could
occur in a community or society
over some specified future time
period.
DISASTER RISK
it is the product of the possible
damage caused by a hazard due
to the vulnerability within a
community. It should be noted
that the effect of a hazard would
affect communities differently
(depending on the magnitude)
DISASTER RISK
it can also be determined by the
presence of three variables:
• hazards
• vulnerability to a hazard
• coping capacity linked to
reduction, mitigation, and
resilience to the
vulnerability of a
community.

ACTIVITY 1.3 CLASSIFYING
Direction: IdentifyDISASTER
the given set of images if it is Natural
or Man-made.
Tacloban, Leyte, Philippines
Russian military convoy
Volcanic eruption
Toxic metal barrels
Motor vehicle accident
Earthquake in Japan
Question:
Based on the presented images, how will you differentiate
natural from man-made disasters? Explain your answer in
2-3 sentences.
ACTIVITY 1.4 UNDERSTANDING
DISASTER RISK
Direction: Accomplish the table.
AM I READY?
Do you think you are relatively well
prepared when a disaster might affect your
community either natural or man-made as
well as its effects?
AM I READY?
List down 5 important things that you need
to prepare in order to lessen the possible
danger that you and your family might
encounter when a disaster strike.
explain your answers briefly.
