BARTHOLINITIS

PRESENTED BY
MUSKAN TIWARI
M.SC. NURSING
DEFINITION

 Bartholinitis is a disease characterized by the

development of the inflammatory process in the
Bartholin's gland.
CAUSES

 A body saturated in toxins, which accumulate in different

areas of the body, like in these glands .
 Lack of feminine hygiene, using tight clothing or synthetic
fibers.
 Excessive stress could cause this inflammation.
 Frequent change of sexual partners, greatly increasing the
risk of contracting diseases that are sexually transmitted.
 Due to scratching, rubbing of the genitalia.
SIGN AND SYMPTOMS

 Dark red inflammation in the area.

 According to the intensity of the infection and if a lump
fills with a smelly fluid that has a strong and unpleasant
odor.
 Pain and inflammation could increase if the woman stands
or walks too much.
 Pain and burning.
 Raised body temperature to 39°C.
 Weakness
TREATMENT

 Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms. If there

are no symptoms, no treatment may be needed.
 If a cyst is causing problems, drainage is recommended.
The preferred method of drainage is the insertion of a
Word catheter. The catheter stays in place for 2 to 4
weeks draining the fluid and causing a normal gland
opening to form, after which the catheter is removed. The
catheters do not generally impede normal activity, but
sexual intercourse is generally abstained from while the
catheter is in place .
CONT

 Cysts may also be opened permanently, a procedure called

Marsupialization, in which an opening to the gland is
formed with stitches to hold the secretion channel open.
 If a cyst is infected, it may break open and start to heal
on its own after 3 to 4 days. Nonprescription pain
medication such as ibuprofen relieves pain, and a Sitz
bath may increase comfort. Warm compresses can speed
healing. If a Bartholin gland abscess comes back several
times, the gland and duct can be surgically removed
PREVENTION
 Observance of the rules of hygiene of external genital
organs is of fundamental importance.
 Timely treatment of foci of chronic infection: urethritis,
colpitis, caries pyelonephritis etc.
 Annual preventive visit to the gynecologist even in the
absence of complaints.
 Avoiding wearing tight underwear, especially synthetic
one.
 General strengthening of immunity: full sleep, proper
nutrition, sufficiently active way avoidance of
hypothermia, etc.
