Basic principles of wireless communications
 What is wireless Communication?
 Wireless communication is the transfer of information between two
or more points that are not connected by an electrical conductor.
 no physical wire attachment
 Typically use electromagnetic waves
 Electromagnetic waves
 Travel at speed of light (c = 3x10 8 m/s)
 Has a frequency (f) and wavelength (l)
c = f x l
 Higher frequency means higher energy photons
 The higher the energy photon the more penetrating is the radiation
Characteristics of wireless communications
systems
1. Mobility
2. Reachability
3. Simplicity
4. Maintainability
5. Roaming Services
Why wireless ?
Freedom from wires
 No cost of installing the wires, No bunches of wires
running around e.g. Bluetooth , Wi-Fi
 Low footprint
 Global Coverage
 Where wired communication is not feasible or costly
e.g. rural areas, battle field and outer space.
Stay Connected
 Any where any time
 Flexibility
 Connect to multiple devices simultaneously
 Rapid (re)configuration

Application of wireless communication
1. Vehicles
 transmission of news, road condition, weather, music via DAB(digital
audio broadcasting)
 personal communication using GSM
 position via GPS
 local ad-hoc network with vehicles close-by to prevent accidents,
guidance system, redundancy
 vehicle data (e.g., from busses, high-speed trains) can be transmitted in
advance for maintenance

2. Emergencies
 early transmission of patient data to the hospital, current status, first
diagnosis
 replacement of a fixed infrastructure in case of earthquakes, hurricanes,
fire etc.
 crisis, war, ...
Typical application: road traffic
3. Travelling salesmen
 direct access to customer files stored in a central location
 consistent databases for all agents
 mobile office
4. Replacement of fixed networks
 remote sensors, e.g., weather, earth activities
 flexibility for trade shows
 LANs in historic buildings
5. Entertainment, education, ...
 outdoor Internet access
 intelligent travel guide with up-to-date
location dependent information
 ad-hoc networks for
multi user games
