MOTION AND
ITS TYPES
Linear or Translational Motion
When a force acts on a stationary rigid body which is free to
move, the body starts moving in a straight path in the
direction of force. This is called the Linear or Translational
Motion.
Rotational Motion
If the body is pivoted at a point and the force is applied on
the body at a suitable point, it rotates the body about the
axis passing through the pivoted point. This is called
Rotational Motion

TURNING
EFFECT
When force is applied to the object in such a way that an object
starts moving in a circle about a pivot point is called the turning
effect of force.
This turning effect of the force is called the moment of the force.
The force can move the object in a clockwise or in an anti-
clockwise direction about a pivoted point which depends upon
the direction of the force

Hello Friends Torque Seekhlo !

UE
• T = F x d where, d is the perpendicular
distance.
• It is a vector quantity. Its SI unit is
newton-metre (N-m) and CGS unit is
dyne-cm.
• 1 N-m = 107 dyne-cmm
1 kgf x m = 9.8 Nm

COUP
In mechanics, a couple is a systemLE
of
forces with a resultant moment of force
but no resultant force. A better term is
force couple or pure moment. Its effect is
to impart angular momentum but no
linear momentum.

EQUILIBR
IUM
• An object in equilibrium has both the sum of the forces
acting on it and the sum of the moments of the forces
(torque) on it equal to zero
• When a body remains in the state of rest under the
influence of several forces, the body is in static
equilibrium.
• When a body remains in the same state of motion, under
the influence of the several forces, the body is said to be
in dynamic equilibrium.

EQUILIBRIUM KA
CONDITION
FOR
EQUILIBRIUM
• Vector sum of the forces acting on
the body should be zero.
• Algebraic sum of moments acting on
the body should be zero.
• An object is said to be in equilibrium
if a number of forces acting on it
producesno change in its state of rest
or of uniform motion. Its motion may
be there in rotational or translational
equilibrium.

PRINCIPLE
OF
MOMENTS
If a body is in equilibrium under the
action of a number of forces, then the
algebraic sum of the moments of the
forces about any point is equal to zero.
It can be expressed as,
A.C.W Moments = C.W Moments

CENTRE OF GRAVITY
Centre of gravity of a body is the point
about which the algebraic sum of
moments of weights of all the particles
constituting the body is zero. The entire
weight of the body can be considered to
act at this point, however the body is
placed.
