Starter – have a think!

 What is another name for a

volumetric analysis?
 How do you fill a pipette safely?
 Why do you swirl the conical flask
during a titration?
Objectives
 To complete a titration between the
standard solution and hydrochloric
acid.
 To complete an appropriate results
table and identify two concordant
results.
 To work out the concentration of the
acid.
Titration
Na2CO3 + 2HCl  CO2 + 2NaCl +H2O

25cm3 of 0.1 mol/dm3 Na2CO3 and an

unknown concentration of HCl.

Titration
Na2CO3 + 2HCl  CO2 + 2NaCl +H2O

 Number of moles of Na2CO3 :

 C = 0.1 mol/dm3
 V = 25cm3
 n = CV
Titration
Na2CO3 + 2HCl  CO2 + 2NaCl +H2O

 Number of moles of HCl : 2x nNa CO

2 3

 Now use n=CV again but:

 nHCl = 2nNa CO
2 3

 V = titre/1000 dm3
 C = n/V
Plenary – true or false?
 A standard solution is a mixture of known
concentration.
 Titration is another name for volumetric
analysis.
 Alkalis are always put in a burette.
 The top of a meniscus should be on a
calibration line.
 When the indicator changes colour a
titration has just started.
