integers by writing the
symbol > or < on the line.
+13 > +8
-6 < -2
+7 > -15
-1 < +9
OBJECTIVES
 Perform addition of integers.

 Solves problems using addition of

integers.
 Shows fairness to all.
Is our lesson today in our day to day
undertakings?

What instance in your daily life have you

encountered adding integers?
Please raise your hand if your
family belongs to an IP’s group.

In your community or household, what

instances have you encountered adding
integers?
Let’s read and study this word problem.
Mrs. Reyes bought fruits that cost P 700.00
from a wholesaler and sold them in her fruits
stand. On Monday, her sales is P800.00 and on
Tuesday, P500.00. But on Wednesday, she lose
P400.00 because some of the fruits are already
rotten. Considering the sales of fruits for the three
days, did Mrs. Reyes gain or lose profit?
Can you guess if Mrs. Reyes
gains or lose profit?
Considering the sales of Mrs. Reyes on the
three days, represent the gain and loss
using integers.

To determine the total sales means to

combine the gains and loss.
From the given word
problem, answer the
following questions:
How are we going to combine the gain
and loss?
1.What is the total sale of fruits of Mrs. Reyes?
(+800) + (+500) + (-400) = 900

The total sales from Monday to Wednesday is

P900.
How are we going to combine the
2.How can gain and loss?
we determine if Mrs. Reyes
900 - 700 = 200
gained or lost money from selling her
fruits?
Comparing this to the capital of P700, we
can say that Mrs. Reyes gained P200 since
her total sales of P900 is more than her
capital which is P700.
Adding two positive integers
(+4) + (+3) = +7

Adding two negative integers

(-8) + (-3) = -11
Adding a positive & a negative
integer
(+10) + (-5) = +5

(-34) + (+13) = -21

What guides
you in adding
integers?
If the addends have the
same sign, the numbers are
added and the common
sign is affixed to the sum.
If the addends have different
sign, the signs are first
disregarded and the
difference between the
numbers is obtained. The sign
of the greater number is
affixed to the answer.

Mt. Everest, the highest elevation in
Asia, is 29 028 feet above sea level. The
Dead Sea, the lowest elevation, is 1 312 feet
below sea level. What is the sum of these
two elevations?
UNDERSTAND

A.What is asked?
The sum of the two elevations.
B.What are the given facts?
Mt. Everest is 29 028 feet above sea level
and the Dead Sea is 1 312 feet below sea level.
PLAN

Write a mathematical sentence.

SOLVE
Since Mt. Everest is 29 028 feet above sea level and the
Dead Sea is 1 312 feet below sea level, we will add the two.
So we have:
(+29028) + (-1312) = n
(+29028) + (-1312) = (+27716)
CHECK

We can check if our answer is correct by subtraction.

(+29028) - (+27716) = (-1312)
