How do we

compare
integers?
What is Comparing means?
- In Math comparing means identifying which of
two numbers is bigger or smaller than the
other.
- When comparing, we might also encounter
that are numbers that are equal.
Comparing Number Symbols
Comparing positive integers
- When asked to compare positive integers, it is
as simple comparing whole numbers.
- If we compare +5 and + 6, we know that six is
bigger than 5.
Comparing negative integers

Which of the two negative is bigger?

To have a better understanding, we can use a number

line and see where these integers are located
Integers in the Number Line

With the number line, we need to remember that as the number

goes from 0 to the right, the number gets bigger and bigger.

And, we got that:

1 < 0 one is greater than zero
2 < 1 two is greater than one
6 < 5 six is greater than five
Go the other way around the opposite
direction

As the number goes to the left , the number gets

smaller and smaller

And we got that:

0 < 1 zero is less than one
1 < 2 one is less than two
5 < 6 five is less than six
Let’s Try To Comparing Negative Numbers

The numbers get bigger as going to the right

and smaller as going to the left.
Which is bigger:
-5 or -6?
• Locating the two negative integers that were
given (-5 or -6), we see that -6 on the left of -5

• Therefore, we can conclude that it is -5 that is

bigger between -5 and -6.
-5 > -6
Concept of comparing integers
• The farther number on the positive side of the
number line is the greater value.

• The farther number on the negative side of

the number line is the smaller value
Dealing with bigger integers

By using the number line, we can comparing

bigger integers. For examples 500 is greater
than 50 an -500 is less than -50.
Conclusion
• All positive integers are greaten than zero.

• All negative integers are less than zero.

Let’s have some concrete example!
Lani, Lisa and Linda went to the Cafetaria to take
their snacks. Lani Brought 6 donuts, Lisa brought to
donuts, and Lisa forgot to bring her snacks for the
day. So, Lani decided to giver her two donuts, which
Linda promised to pay the next day.
Each of the girls ate two donuts of their snacks.
After their snacks, Lani still has two extra donuts
left which we write as +2.
Lisa has no more donuts left, so we write is as 0.
Linda owes Lani two donuts, which we write as -2.

We can now see that

negative integers such as
-2, which is
representation for Linda’s
case is less than 0.
Comparing Positive and Negative Integers

Positive number is always bigger than negative number.

In the number line, all positive numbers are on right
side and all negative numbers are on left side.
