05 Characteristics of a good Bricks

What is Brick in
civil engineering?
Brick is a construction
material in civil engineering.
Brick is used to making walls,
pavement, and brick
structures, or for the
partition of a room,
Composition of a good Bricks
50 % to 60%

Silica
Silica prevents raw bricks from cracking, shrinking and warping. The
higher the proportion of sand, the more and shapely and uniform in
texture will be the brick.

20% to 30%
Alumina
Alumina imparts plasticity to the earth, so that it can be moulded. If it is
excess raw bricks shrink and wrap during drying and burning.
2% to 5%

Lime
Bricks should contain a little amount of finely powdered lime. It enables silica to melt at the
furnace temperature of 1650oC and binds the particles of brick together resulting in strong and
durable bricks.

5% to 6%

Iron Oxide
It should be in the range of 5-6% for the good bricks.
It impart colour to the bricks
Less than 1%
Magnesia
It imparts Yellowish colour to the brick.
It also decrease shrinkage in the brick.
Classification of Bricks
01 First class Bricks 02 Second class Bricks
• This are table moulded • This are ground moulded
• Surface & edge are sharp • Surface & edge are Rough
• Metallic ringing when strike • The quality of this bricks is
each other inferior
• Used for superior work

03 Third class Bricks 04 Fourth class Bricks

• The surface & edge are rough • This bricks are over burnt
• Does not create any metallic • Irregular shape & dark colour
sound • Used in Floor, Foundation &
• Used for temporary and Road
unimportant work
Manufacturing process of Bricks
Preparation of clay

Moulding of clay

Drying

Burning
Characteristics of a good bricks
1. Bricks should have sharp edge.

2. Bricks shall not break in to pieces when dropped from height about 1 meter

3. Clear ringing sound when struck with each other .

4. It should not absorb water more than 20% of its dry weight .

5. It should have good compressive strength, not less than 35 kg /cm 3
